I think this has popped up on the forum before and it varies from canton to canton. Not particularly relevant in this particular thread but might be useful for anyone else looking through this thread in future.
I'm sure it's 8 days where I am. And even then, when you fill in the form and put on the date you arrived, the Gemeinde staff tip-ex it out and write in that days date.

Not according to this:

REGISTRATION

If you intend to stay in Switzerland for longer than three months and/or to take up gainful employment, you must report to the local authorities within 14 days of your arrival. In any case you must register before starting a job.

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

If I have evidence that I've been trying, and an email trail, is this ok? He is saying he won't be back in the country for 2 weeks from now - that'll be 6 weeks since I arrived..

No, it's 14 days when you first arrive in the country, the 8 days is when you change cantons for any reason, Island Monkey. But whichever you are way over your time limit, but at least you have been trying to register.
Does this time limit still apply if I got a Carte de Légitimation on arrival but then wanted to upgrade to a residence permit later?

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

You don't upgrade, you change jobs. As long as you're working for an NGO you'll have a carte de legitimation. A permit is only for people living in Switzerland who don't work for NGO's. But no, the time limit wouldn't apply unless you move cantons, i.e if you're living in Geneva currently and move to Vaud - then you have 8 days in which to deregister from Geneva and re-register in Vaud.

And a job not with an NGO. If you leave your NGO then you can become a job seeker for 3 months as you're an EU national providing you have sufficient funds to support yourself. But you cannot get a permit while you still work for an NGO.

I've never had to show a rental agreement to the authorities! You can't show one in any case if you are not renting!

Hi,

Read through your post earlier with interest.

You mentioned presenting a work contract (if I have one), does this have to be a work contract from a Swiss based company?

I am a British national employed by a non EU (Hong Kong) company for employment in EU, I seriously considering being based in Switzerland for a lot of the geographical advantages it offers, my question is this;

Would the canton immigration office accept this work contract for my residence permit application (I am not working in Switzerland just living)?

Any advise you could provide is well received

Cheers
TisMe

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

You'd have to ask the cantonal migration office where you plan to live. I think it's possible as you will be earning although not via a Swiss employer, but only the migration office can tell you for sure.

Could you please provide a link where I can find info on where I need to register and what documents I need while working for an NGO? Thank you
