How do I apply for a residency permit??

Hi there

I would really appreciated it if someone could tell me how to apply for a residency permit (L).
I have looked through prev. threads and can't seem to find the info.
Is there a way I can do it online?
Please help!

Thanks,

Caroline

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

Didn't the local commune and/or employer in Lausanne sort it out when you arrived? You just rock up there as soon as you arrive with all the necessary documents (employment contract, passport, Swiss address, etc) and they get the ball rolling.

If you are staying for less than 3 months, to work, you can do it online. If its longer you need to go to your Gemeinde (French?). Take your work contract, passport, passport photos, and cash!

How long does it usually take for a residence permit to come through?

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

If it's already been approved, you just need to go to the town hall to register. You can ask them to issue a confirmation on the spot, if you feel that you need it...

It's unclear whether you are EU or Non-EU, your purpose for needing a permit, and why you need the permit issued quickly...

What's the situation ?

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

My apologies, I should have been clearer!
I am an EU citizen who is here for a 6 month internship. I need quick confirmation so I can open a bank account so that's good that I can ask for one on the spot.
Am I correct in assuming that you go to the same place as you apply for a work permit? If not, what would it be called? I am located in Pully.
Thank you for all your help

Your work permit is your residence permit. It is one of the same thing. It is possible to have a residence permit without the allowance to work, but not a work permit without the allowance to reside (that would be silly).

If you are saying you have a work permit, a small purple or cream wallet with an L or a B on it... then that is your residence permit.

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

Excellent, thank you. That makes things a lot clearer!

One more thing: Is it usual for them to ask for a copy of the contract between my landlord and his landlord? My landlord has said that he won't 'do' paperwork, so I am trying to convince him that I need this document to get a work permit, because a few friends have said that they asked for this.

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

Are you subletting ? I'm not sure if you are entitled to see the original lease documents, but at the very least you should have a clearly stated and legal sublet agreement, and know who the landlord is. I think it would be very easy to ask for a copy of the original lease agreement, if you are subletting, just in case there are some regulations that you are not aware of....

As for not 'doing' paperwork - that sounds alarm bells to me already... too many sad sublet complaints here on the forum!

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

Yes I am subletting. While alarm bells are also going off for me, I think it's mainly that he doesn't know the processes and things needed for permits, etc. I am looking to move but as I'm sure you're aware, it's extremely competitive!

I guess I need to convince him to let me see his agreement with his landlord. I don't even know his landlord's name!

Thank you.

Check with other people in the building. I assume the building is administered by the same party and they can give you details.

Did you tell your landlord why you need the paperwork? Is it possible he's not informed them that he's subletting to you?

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

I've never had to show a contract, just had to fill in a form saying where I was living, size of property etc.

However, I would want a contract!

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

Hi people, one more question.

How long do I have for to apply for my permit after I entered the country?

I have been here a month but thanks to my landlord I've have so many delays. He is now saying he won't sign for 2 weeks as he is away.

I am very worried that there will come a point where I can no longer apply...

At this point I would go along to your Kreisbüro (commune office?) and tell them the situation. It is not your fault that your landlord is dragging his feet but the axe will probably fall in your direction if you don't have your paperwork up to scratch.

At least you will have shown willing and gone some way to show that it's not your fault. Plus maybe they can get the ball rolling with the paperwork you have already.

Re: How do I apply for a residency permit??

Hi, Sandgrounder.

I have already been, looking forlorn and worried, to be turned away. I've also been to the bank twice, and have an email trail with my vacationing landlord so I hope to God that'll work in my favour!

You guys are so helpful. Thank you.

8 days! You won't not be able to apply but you might get a hefty fine!
If you've not been into the commune office yet, I'd tell then you've only just arrived they won't be impressed to find out you've been here for a month. However if you've already started working you won't get away with that.

If you've already been & they are just waiting for the contract you should be fine.

No, it's 14 days when you first arrive in the country, the 8 days is when you change cantons for any reason, Island Monkey. But whichever you are way over your time limit, but at least you have been trying to register.

I think this has popped up on the forum before and it varies from canton to canton. Not particularly relevant in this particular thread but might be useful for anyone else looking through this thread in future.

I sub letted for 6 years with 2 different people, never any paperwork, alarm bells should be ringing when you sign a contract in a language you don't understand
