Moving to Zurich then immediately leaving on a business trip

First of all, hello! I'm a long time lurker on the forum, and soon moving to the Zurich area.

I'm due for an inter-company transfer at the beginning of November, which will be immediately (2 days after start date) followed by a 2-month business trip to company HQ outside of Switzerland, and I'm running into some trouble about setting up with the payroll here. The work permit (L, despite open-ended contract) has already been issued.

To get on the payroll, I have been told I need an address so I can register at the Gemeinde - this makes sense, as part of the tax one pays is at the locality level. However, I won't be living here for that period, and I am going to be on a legitimate business trip. I have everything set up for when I arrive back - accommodation, relocation agent etc and I have 3 months to find a place to rent.

Issues:
* accommodation afterwards will not allow me to register at the beginning of Nov
* the company cannot help with this (I cannot register with the company address)

I am very very surprised I cannot find any documentation about this situation, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has ever had to do this. I would have expected there was a way to start paying tax in this situation.

What's the sensible way to proceed here?

Can they not continue to pay you via London/UK part of the company until you get back from your trip? Presumably you won't have a bank account here either without a Swiss address so how would the company be able to pay your salary in Switzerland? Seems like very bad planning on your company's part if I may say so.

Re: Moving to Zurich then immediately leaving on a business trip

Being paid in the UK is what they suggested but I would really like to avoid that if at all possible, as I'm trying to break all ties with the UK as soon as I can.

Regarding the bank account they seem to have a deal with one of the cantonal banks which involves just mailing in all the required paperwork (required paperwork list does not include Gemeinde registration for some reason, which I find strange?) I'll have to e-mail them and ask how things would work I guess.

You won't be able to set up an account in two days, as you will need a copy of your permit for that. So, your options are a) being paid in the UK or b) not being paid at all.

Is it possible you can arrive in CH 5-7 days before your business trip? That'll give you a few days to get some of these important tasks done before you head out.

Could you "be a guest" of a co-worker or friend during your time on business and register that address with your company? And then when you get back change your address to your temporary apartment. You would need to get your name on the mailbox or manage to get mail addressed to you c/o someone on the mailbox.

When we set up our account, we just needed the paper showing that we had registered at the Gemeinde, not the actual permit.

I'm traveling over for work next week, hopefully I'll be able to handle some of the stuff already then.

Yeah that was the route I tried - still looking for someone, hopefully I'll find someone to help with this, but I figure better to be on the lookout for other options in the meanwhile.

That's what I expected as well - I'll go investigate whether that's needed or not.
