House Sitting Offer! Nice Couple! January 2014 - April 2014

Hello, we are Louis and Tina, a nice couple from Belgium,
We are new to this forum!

We are both teachers, Louis a music teacher and Tina a theater teacher. We decided that we wanted something completely different in our lives so a year a go we went to America for nine months, we where busy with our real interests: exploring the world, travelling, doing yoga, making films, playing music,... And we even got married :-) After those nine months we decided to keep on travelling for a while in Europe, and we're still travelling thru Spain right now.
After long thinking we decided we want to study again, (distance study via the internet), and work on some artistic projects! Like filmmaking, composing music, dancing,... That's why we're looking to stay in the mountains for the winter! To keep ourselves inspired because of the beautiful nature, to walk, hike and ski to stay a little bit fit! And ofcourse study :-) A good mind in a good body :-)
We're looking for a place where we can stay from beginning January until mid-april. Or maybe even longer, but that's not nessecary. We've been looking on house sitting websites or petsitting websites but we haven't found a place yet! We know how to garden, have basic maintenance skills, speak English, Dutch and French.
If you know somebody who needs a long term house sitter or pet sitter or has accomodation to offer us, or maybe you are that person? We would be very grateful if you could help us further :-) This way we will be introduced how living is in Switzerland, and maybe we might do it one day!
Lots of love and we wish you all the best!
Xxx
Louis and Tina

What are your finances like? Because without being able to support yourselves while you're here, assuming you don't plan to work, then you wouldn't get a residency permit to stay here. Although Switzerland is part of the EU Free Movement Agreement, without a job or sufficient funding you simply can't stay here long term.

Also, are you really set on the mountains?

I ask because Jan-April is prime skiing time - and most people rent their properties out for pretty handsome fees during the high season. Hoping to find a house sit where someone pays you to take care of the house, or even just an exchange of accomodation for services during that time, is a pretty big ask.

If you were to look in the grey overcast dreary non-tourist spots you might have better luck.

Housesitting is a very small niche in Switzerland, because there are very few folks with houses. Those with properties in need of watching often have professional services taking care of that.

A couple of things that might help your search, from a client's perspective:

You'll need references. Swiss references would be best.

You'll need a police report from your home country, and one from your time in the US. This is standard whenever hiring someone who will have access to your home.

You'll need to understand liability issues - whether you'll have to take out your own liability insurance, or whether you would be covered under the homeowner's insurance. This is a discussion to have with a potential client, but be prepared.

If you are offering pet care, be aware that qualifications are required if you are paid to care for a dog.

Don't get discouraged, but do be realistic. Good luck!

Also on the insurance side, if you're resident here you have to have a Swiss health insurance policy. Even if you have an emergency EHIC card from Belgium, once you become resident in another country it becomes void. Basic Swiss health insurance is mandatory for all residents.
