Tourist Visa Extension

Hi,

I am currently residing in Zurich, with an L-permit and require my parents to visit me. I have applied for a Tourist visa which has been issued for 1 month. The visit is yet to begun(begins in march).

I am interested to know the procedure to get the tourist Visa extended to 90 days once they are here. Can someone kindly let me know if this is a possibility and how I go about getting the extension.

is the extention a simple process and easily obtained with a sufficient case ?? and what kind of finanacial supportings are advisable for a period of 2 months (extension) per person.

regards,
karthick

Re: Tourist Visa Extension

You need to go to the Fremdenpolizei (Immigration Office) in Zurich and ask what is required and the proper procedure neeeded for a visa extension.

As for my case they'll gave me a form to fill and I am also required to write a formal letter accompaning the form and explaining why do I need an extension on my tourist visa. Then I am invited for an interview and explain to them in person why is it necessary for me to get an extension on my visa.

My reason was I interested in talking up a German couse which ends 20 days after my visa expiry date.

Good luck.

Re: Tourist Visa Extension

Hello!
As far as my experience goes it is almost impossible to extend it from here. Just weeks after I gave birth to a child, my husband was hospitalized. My mother was here and we wanted to get her visa extended for about a moth as my husband was very weak and so was I. Inspite of getting a letter from doctor, she was not granted the permission. But they were kind enough to suggest that if we apply for the extension in the last minute, she can stay here atleast until they respond to our request(which would any way be negative).

Re: Tourist Visa Extension

well I got my parents exetnded by just applying and filling in the form. We were asked to come a week before the visa expired to the cantonal office with a letter of explanation, required forms and salary slip and voila we got an extension within 4 days. Only difference is we have a B permit, Dont know if that makes a differnce. Good luck

Re: Tourist Visa Extension

Hi,

Since the beginning of 2008, from what I understood, there is NO way an extension of Visitor Visa can be extended for people residing on L- Permits.
The arguement in this favor is that L-permit holders are themselves here on a short term and a Visitor visa extension does not make sense.

Bottom line is that... if one wants to have a visitor visa for the period of 3 months(max), the only way to achieve that is by getting it in the first attempt itself when you apply for the Visitor visa initially.

The Authorities are very strict about this and i see no scope to avoid it. That indeed means my attempts failed.

Maybe you should still try your luck... one can never say without trying.

I guess that tough luck huh? Well I think there should be some kind of exception. Maybe a very good reason will let you get an extension but based on the previous poster experience, a very good reason will still yield negative result.

Re: Tourist Visa Extension

Dear Friends,

I have a strange case my dad has been granted visa (visit duration) for 60 days and my mom only 30 days (the visa validity for both is 90 days).

Now how does that make sense - if it was both on same date we might have even accepted, now the dilema for me is how to realign the dates for both.

Of course it would be a shame if they changed my dad's duration also to 30 days.

Appreciate if anyone experienced this scenario and dealt with it and saw a positive outcome (60 days for both)

I'm on an L permit so - looks like it will an uphill cause,

Cheers
Subba

Re: Tourist Visa Extension

Hi Subba, It depends on the reason that you have stated while applying for visa also.no worries you can approach/apply for correction if there is a time to travel but it's possible only from India.Worst case if it's not done you can plan for 30 days trip since ur dad got for 60days n mom for 30days it means visa is valid for 60 days from entry date to Swiss n same to ur mom valid for 30days,so can plan frist 30 days for both from the entry date. Think, why would the Swiss grant a tourist visa only to then have you ask them to extend it.

Their is a reason why they got their visa only for a certain period....

Well they actually issue Schengen visas and those can't be extended beyond the standard 90 days, unless something very exceptional happens.

The exceptions to apply for an extension are:
- Late entry into the Schengen Area, for a person with a single entry visa
- Humanitarian Reasons, almost always medical reasons
- Force Majeure, you are unable to return to your home country because a war or conflict broke out after you left
- Other exception circumstances, no idea what is covered here

Schengen visa's are not necessarily 90 days, they can be issued and are issued for far shorter periods, hence why people think an extension can be granted.

They are granted for shorter periods for very valid reasons so to overturn them by giving an extension doesn't make a lot of sense and a mockery of the original application.

I see you're in Schaan. Are the laws for permits the same there, as for Switzerland?

In addition to whichever exceptional reasons you claim, for an application to be successful it seems important to demonstrate that the person is not trying to immigrate into Switzerland, but has a life to go back to in their home country and will definitely be leaving Swizerland again at the end of this temporary stay.

Although the following thread is about having had a visa application rejected, the same principles apply... plus the circumstances as set out by Jim.
