Criminal background check (Canadian)

Hi,

In order to receive my B permit I am required to provide a criminal background check (Canadian). If I was in Canada this would be pretty easy, all I would need to do is go to the local police station. Unfortunately, my next trip to Canada isn't until June! Were any Canadians able to get a criminal background check down while overseas? Did you use an agency to expedite the process?

Thanks for your advice!

In the UK you can get the police certificate by post, ordered and paid for online. Have you looked on your "Mounties" website?

Re: Criminal background check (Canadian)

When I opened my practice, a criminal record was required for all countries, in which I had resided for the past seven?? years. It was rather easy for all of them, EXCEPT USA....Gosh, they wanted fingerprints and had a wanting period of several months. Crazy! I got around this by telephoning a school friend, who worked at the Department of Public Safety. She sent me a copy of their reports, which sufficed for the Swiss requirements. Thank goodness!

Do you havde someone in Canada, who can help you?

It would appear not OP here is the link you need at the RCMP, however it looks like you will have to get the Swiss police to fingerprint you....

Re: Criminal background check (Canadian)

Thank you for all your replies.

I just called the Canadian Embassy in Switzerland and received the same information. I'm just worried about the processing time, if I submit paper fingerprint (which is what I would receive from the Swiss Police station), according to the RCMP website it would take 22 weeks! So I need an agency that will digitize ink fingerprints and submit them electronically to the RCMP, shortening the processing time to 3 business days or less! Hopefully, I can find one.

Thanks again!

Hey Everyone, I'm new to the forum. I am going through the same thing with the Criminal Check. Did anyone find a faster way to do this? I cannot afford to wait 22 weeks, and I'm not going to Canada until July.

Check if the waiting time still is 22 weeks (as the thread is from 2014). Did you do that??

If it still is, either fly over or wait

The last post you replied to is going back a couple of years. You could call the embassy again and see if they've updated their processes?

"OP" (or is it NP New Poster?) already knows that answer. It is you which did not know it.

And if you had read the question correctly you would see that it is not about if it is still 22 weeks, but if there is an viable option to speed up the process from Europe/Switzerland.

Re: Criminal background check (Canadian)

Thanks for the quick replies!! I have checked the RCMP website (the wait is still 22 weeks for paper submissions) and I have emailed a company in Canada that may be able to Digitise paper prints that are taken from Switzerland (these fingerprints would probably need to be notarised by Canadian Embassy in Bern), thus reducing waiting times to 3-4 business days. I have also been to my local Gemeindehaus and kindly requested that they waive this requirement due to the long waiting times. This last request seems to be the most promising, as they are very understanding people and the Police clearance is not required in all cases. I was only curious to know what the end result of this discussion was and am very happy I signed up for this forum. Thanks everyone. I can keep you posted as to what the Gemeindehaus' response is, and I will find the fastest way possible. 22 weeks is unacceptable!!

As far as my involvement with this has revealed, the cases are variable. There doesn't seem to be an official reason for needing this Clearance, but they must have some sort of profiling criteria (age, sex, citizenship, etc), or perhaps its based on the mood of the bureaucrat that day...... I don't know (that's what I was hoping to find out today). It was explained to me in Canada (before I left), that they may need this form, but it was unlikely. Today, when I spoke to the lady at the Gemeindehaus, she also was not sure under what criteria they need it. Her words were "Sometimes they want one, and other times they don't"

In Ticino: Yes.

For the rest of Switzerland: Not yet, but may come on request of Ticino.

Re: Criminal background check (Canadian)

I was speaking to Migrationsamt in Zurich, in 2013 I think, and the gentleman at the window told me that they do indeed know that getting this from home country could take time. I do not vouch if this info is still true, but he told me that one can sign an affidavit to this extent (the notary's office) and this would be ok for a year, i.e. gives you time. Maybe worth checking into this.

So this is required on Zurich then...

I suppose one could get the info from the source. I never submitted one, neither for B ages ago, nor for C last year.

Re: Criminal background check (Canadian)

I found an acceptable solution! There are two types of checks that you can get done. They are; a Certified Criminal record Check and a Name-based Criminal Record check. The Certified check requires that you prove your identification with fingerprints. This is a pain in the @ss (22 weeks, police, etc...). The second option is what many employment companies perform prior to hiring an individual, it is the Name-based check. This only requires you to provide Full Name, Place of birth and birth date. The results of this check will only state that no record was found, or that you have a record, but details of which are not included. You must have a Certified check for details.

Many companies (Mybackcheck.com, www.commissionaires-ottawa.on.ca, etc) offer a name-based check for about $50-60 CAD and can have it completed within 48 hours. This will include a certificate from the company, and a clearance form from the RCMP. This name based check was all I needed in Canton Bern. I hope this helps somebody.
