How long to leave after permit expires?

It seems odd to me that they only give you a permit til the very last day of your contract. Do they really think that I will go to work, come home, take all my belongings and leave the country before midnight?!?

Is there a grace period to get out of the country? I'm planning to leave within 2 weeks of the expiry date and it seems nonsensical to have to go back and apply for another permit for 2 weeks...

I have an EU passport, I have always been told a week by my Gemeinde, but I've heard other time lengths too.

If you have an EU passport you can pop over the border & leave, then return as a tourist

What if it is a non EU passport but one which does not need a Schengen ? Is it possible to do the same thing then i.e. leave for a couple of weeks and come back as a tourist ? Thanks.

Answered in a post last week. Browse the forum. Person from Hong Kong was told by his canton that after permit expiry they effectivey become a tourist and can stay under normal schengen rules. Had no problems when he flew back.
