Non EU living in France working in Switzerland Unemployment HELP!!

Hello all,

I'm just wondering if anybody else has experience with a complicated work permit/unemployment situation.

SOOOO

I am Canadian, living in Saint Louis France, working in Basel for nearly 6 years

There is a good chance my job will no longer exist by May this year (not for sure but highly likely). I currently hold a residence permit (carte de sejour temporaire) renewable yearly for france which expires Sept of this year and a G permit for Switzerland.

I assume I will qualify for unemployment without a problem (but who knows) my question really is;
1) will i be able to renew my french residence permit while on the dole?
2) if I can't renew it do i simply lose the insurance benefits i paid into for the past 6 years?
3) if i cant renew it will I be asked to leave france immediately? or will I have time to look for a job?

Any information or experience with this situation would be greatly appreciated - i'm feeling pretty stuck between bureaucracies and its depressing to think my home could be taken away so easily.

I do not have a lot a lot of experience, but plenty of sympathy. I imagine the French office that issues the permit will know the answers.

You might also ask the RAV in Basel where you stand with unemployment pay.

Since she lives in France and works in Switzerland as a frontalière, she cannot contact the RAV in Basel.

Im sorry I can't answer the questions you asked but, as said before, you might ask directly to the official instances and maybe start looking for options now rather than later, if your job feels unsecured, the chances to get a new one are higher while holding one.

All the best to you!

1) Not sure, since you are not an EU/EFTA citizen. You may want to contact your nearest Sous-Prefecture.
2) If you cannot renew your residence permit, my guess is that you will have to leave the French territory, thus no benefits whatsoever.
3) You cannot look for a job without a valid residence permit

I would suggest you to contact the Pôle emploi and Unedi. France usually pays up to 60% of your monthly Swiss wage, subject to legal deductions...

I wish you the best of luck!

Re: Non EU living in France working in Switzerland Unemployment HELP!!

I have tried to ask in France at the prefecture but they can't tell me - they basically said you need to have a income and it's up to the visa office when you apply if that counts as income.

My worry is that when I apply for unemployment benefits they will only grant the unemployment for the validity of my permit and the permit will be contingent on the length of the unemployment.

technically I should be entitled to full benefits of unemployment insurance having paid into it for 6yrs but I don't know what rules Pole Emploi have to follow on granting terms of insurance. Stuck in limbo....

and just on a begrudging note: it seems like theft to allow someone to pay into unemployment and not let them claim when they become unemployed!
