Leaving the country before end of naturalisation?

Hello,

I am able to start the naturalisation process now due to having lived in switzerland for the adequate amount of years. However, in 6 months I will be going to study in the United Kingdom. Will this prevent me from completing the naturalisation process and obtaining a passport?
I would still be coming to Switzerland as often as I can - every 2 to 3 weeks for a weekend and all vacation leaves (UK universities gives about 5 months of vacation leave per year).

Hi,
as far as I know even if you have C permit, if you leave Switzerland(officially you do not live here) you will lose the permit and you have to start from the beginning later...

Did you read the sticky at the top of this section? Some good links in there.

EU and non-EU Permits, Schengen, Naturalisation.

She can probably put it on hold to go to university. She must request it be placed on hold at her commune before she leaves. But that is not her question.

I can't help as I only asked about this doing the opposite, staring abroad then finishing here and if you do it that way they say it can "significantly delay the process".

Check out 3Wishes threads, but I imagine this is something that you need to discuss with your commune.

Good luck!

Re: Leaving the country before end of naturalisation?

I agree with all of the above - check with the authorities who would be dealing with the process, starting with commune.

Skimming through the official documents the only variation that popped out at me was the duration of residence. If you came before the age of 12 and got a C permit the duration is reduced from 12 to 8 years. I am not sure of the differences if your first permit was a B (maybe none?).

Probably best to be as honest as possible with the powers-that-be...once you get settled at Uni will you really be returning every 2-3 weeks? Depending on your Uni course that will be a significant time/money expenditure.

Good luck - it is an exciting life transition!

Re: Leaving the country before end of naturalisation?

If you are still registered in Switzerland and abroad for the purpose of studying an undergrad degree, you will indeed be able to continue the nationalisation process. I know someone who was abroad when completing this last year.

But do keep the authorities in the loop - this means your local commune, effectively....they will do the rest.

Re: Leaving the country before end of naturalisation?

Hi guys,

One more question!
I may also start university here in Geneva, and then move to England next year. I'd start the naturalisation process in september (that's when I'm eligible) and then move after being one year into the process. Would this prevent me from completing it?

If you are apply for regularized naturalization then yes.

Because one of the requirements of regular naturalization is that you are obliged to live in your current commune throughout the entire process. Even moving commune during the process may causes problem, let alone moving out of Switzerland.

And the duration of regularization lasts up to 2-3 years. And if you search for relevant threads you will find that in Geneva it is exceptionally long (up to 4 years).

Re: Leaving the country before end of naturalisation?

I disagree. I'm fairly certain that the case I'm related to started the process while studying in the USA and had to juggle the commitments on visits home. Also required was to write a letter showing commitment to Switzerland - i.e. returning once studies are complete.

As a student abroad, you are still domiciled in your current commune (with your parents, most likely).

If she stays domiciled here and as a dependent of her parents then yes and the whole thing will be much easier with no interruptions.

So... Let's hope it's the case for her.

CTFU.

Since she lives in Geneva, she needs to go to OCP and not to her commune

It's a good thing one of my favorite words is pedantic. :P

Is that true for the whole canton of Geneva or just the city?
