Swiss visit visa interview in India

Dear Friends,

My sister (Indian), lives in India wanted to visit me/wife in Switzerland this summer (mid - july) so she applied for a visitor visa last week from Chennai -India (Single visit for 10 days). She got a call from VFS this morning asking her to visit Swiss embassy in Mumbai to attend an interview. they also informed her to take her educational certificates along.

This is her first visit to Switzerland. As far as i know she submitted all the required documents along with the visa application such as bank statements (sufficient funds), travel insurance, return flight tickets, original invitation letter, she is a house wife so a self attested letter stating the same, marriage certificate, my wife's passport copy , my passport copy/permit and our financial details, house rental agreement in switzerland etc..

Not really sure why the Swiss immigration authorities are suspicious with her application given that she wants to visit switzerland for just 10 days and its a single entry visa. Anyone here experienced similar situation before? is visit visa interview a common thing when applying from India? any pointer would be helpful.

i did search through the forum and found an old thread with some information but it is not latest so the reason for my new thread

interview compulsory for visitor visa for first time indian travellers ?

And just to add i am Indian with Spouse dependent B permit and my wife is Swiss.

Thanks for all your help

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

Yes, but did she post the application in or deliver it in person. This says the application has to be delivered in person.

Step 1 :All applications will be assessed by the Consulate General of Switzerland at Mumbai only. Please note that Switzerland Visa Application Centres in West & South are unable to receive and process applications send by courier / post; the applications must be submitted and collected either in person or by an authorized representative or a Travel Agent.

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

I guess it is normal for first time traveler. When I visited schengen area(Germany) first time from India on business visa in 2008. I appeared for a interview in German consulate in Chennai. After that I never have to appear for interview again. I guess same is mentioned in this document

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

Thanks Simple_person, that's quite relieving. Its just that my brother(Indian) applied for Swiss visit visa from UAE (he is a residents there) and he got the visa stamped/delivered in 5 days. he never had to attend any interview as such, that got me perplexed with the interview bit when applying from India.

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

That may just be because Germany insists on it though. Certainly the thread you linked to zoko37 suggests that doesn't seem to apply for people coming to Switzerland. Maybe the short length of the visit has something to do with it. And why would they want to see her educational certificates?

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

I guess this rule is for Indian resident applying for any schengen country. I found this on official Switzerland website too:

http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home/...nd/vndind.html

"Kindly note that first time travelers to Schengen countries have to present themselves for a personal interview. Once the interview has been conducted, and the application is complete, please allow 4 working days for the decision."

Thats exactly where my confusion lies, i think the immigration authorities suspect that she may attend interviews or anything of that sort during her stay. The other concern that i have is my wife and my sister have the same professions (medicine) (though my sister is no longer working). will that cause any issue? I just hope visa doesn't get rejected.

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

Just ask her to carry all documents and make herself familiar with itinerary, insurance etc. They may try to know at the time of interview if she is going Switzerland for visit or other purposes like job etc so she should not deviate under pressure.

After my interview at German consulate I felt like my visa will be rejected but it came next day. Good luck

Good catch simple_person. I wonder why they don't mention that on the Mumbai site too?

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

If you read pdf from my previous link:

"Persons who have travelled to the Schengen area twice within the last 24 months do not require an interview, unless specified."

So if you are applying after 24 months you may be called for an interview even if they did it earlier. What a drag?

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

For the last couple of years they have instituted a policy of asking first time visitors to switzerland to appear for an in person interview. Generally this a very short interview with a few basic questions. Once this is done any subsequent visas are granted without an interview in most cases.

Re: Swiss visit visa interview in India

Thanks all, the officer at the Swiss embassy Mumbai who carried out the interview informed that interview is compulsory when applying from Delhi but not for all who apply from Mumbai.

Below questions were asked in Swiss embassy Mumbai.

1. what was the reason for your travel
2. who will take care of your expenses in switzerland
3. Where will you stay in Switzerland i.e. address
4. copy of educational qualifications and previous work experiences.
5. as she is a house wife they took information about her husbands job & income.
6. she quit her job recently (4 months back) so reason as to why she quit her job.

Passport will be couriered in 3 to 5 working days. Hope she gets it.
