Basel - How quickly Swiss passport could be renewed/issued

Hi folks

just in case someone went through this already

We have a trip to USA planned for next week (Tuesday), just discovered that passport of my wife (Swiss, issued in May 2009) is not valid for ESTA purposes e.g. is not machine readable.

Does anyone have an experience getting a new passport issued within 24 hours from Basel, as I am not sure how much time they need to print one out.

I see that there is an option to get an emergency passport, but am not sure if it is going to be machine readable (thus acceptable for ESTA).

thanks

A week or two.

My old 2004 Swiss passport is machine readable.

However, if issued after 2006 it also needs a chip.

You will have to cancel your trip or move your flights back at least two weeks. The US embassy will most likely not issue a visa on such short notice and you will not be able to get a biometric passport (the ESTA requirement) within such a short period of time.

Re: Basel - How quickly Swiss passport could be renewed/issued

The 2 previous are right.

Also an emergency passport is really for an emergency. Eg. a relative is in hospital, in trouble, attendance to a U.S. court. Definitely not suitable for a pleasure trip. Even if the Swiss police issued you one (it costs min Fr. 100.- and valid only for one trip AFAIK) the American immigration officer will for sure ask you why you are traveling with such passport.

Hence I recommend you to postpone your trip.

Also what type of passport does your wife have?

- Passport 85: no longer valid (including in CH/EU).

- Passport 03: valid for 10 years. It's an e-passport but not biometric. U.S. visa is required unless it has been issued before October 26, 2006, then you don't need a U.S. visa, just an ESTA clearance.

- Passport 06: e-passport and biometric. Valid for 5 years. This passport was a temporary project before the new law was approved

- Passport 10: same as 06 but valid for 10 years. This is the only passport that Swiss authorities are currently issuing.

Holders of the 2 latter passports are eligible for VWP / ESTA program.

Re: Basel - How quickly Swiss passport could be renewed/issued

OP before you freak out, are you 100% positive it is not machine-readable?

My husband's Swiss passport was issued in 2005. It is not biometric, but it is machine-readable. He's entered the U.S. under ESTA multiple times. I would be very, very surprised if your wife's passport is not acceptable given that it was issued 4 years after my hubby got his.

Open the passport to the photo page. At the bottom of the page are there a bunch of arrows with letters and numbers that correspond to your wife's info? For example:

>>SMITH>>JANE>>ELIZABETH>>>>>>>1950.01.01>>>>>
>>>CHE>>>12345678>>20091205>>

If yes, the passport is machine readable and you should be fine.

Re: Basel - How quickly Swiss passport could be renewed/issued

thank you for the useful info

the passport is 03, and issued after 2006 (2009). The only hope that we have, before postponing the trip, is that we have still valid L1B visas, and we applied for L1A visas which are being processed, will call embassy tomorrow to see if we could travel on the older visa, if not then postpone the trip for 2 weeks or so

Any passport issued after 2006 must be biometric, thus why your husband has no problem, but the OP does.

Not recognized by the U.S. for VWP/ESTA travel as not biometric. Needs Visa, which be issued only in very special cases.

Oh, and as others have said. New passport takes about a week, up to two. But if you are lucky you get it a new pass within two business days or even less.
I was at the passport office on Thursday got it next Tuesday. Friend was there on a Friday, got in on Saturday!!

They say max 10 business days. http://www.baselland.ch/pass_produkt....312256.0.html

Re: Basel - How quickly Swiss passport could be renewed/issued

Additionally, it takes approx. one business day from data registration until you can schedule an appointment with the Passbüro.
Register here:
http://www.schweizerpass.admin.ch/pass/de/home.html Register ASAP, best would have been last Friday. Really, do it now.

In best case you can choose tomorrow an appointment for Wednesday and then keep fingers crossed that it will arrive before the flight.
