Regarding this at least in the canton of GVA you can indeed apply for a passport once you fufill 10 years of residency in GVA (for US citizens) - even if your on a B-permit. Also, I think until the age of 20 or 21 each year of residency under student status is considered as two years.

i.e. enter suisse at 15

15-20=5 years x 2 = 10 years

Regards,

MA
You are mistaken. The residency requirements are twelve years in Switzerland (federal requirement), and at least two in Geneva (cantonal requirement) before actually filing the demand. And so that we're on the same page, residency requirements do not vary unlike C permit requirements.

So, first, you (well, your girlfriend) would need to get at least six years of residency (actually more as the cutoff is at 20). Then, when you file the demand, they will check whether you have a permit entitling you to stay here while the file is processed. I believe the student permit will not qualify as it is bound to expire in the meantime.

Regards,

the helpdesk.

Re: C Permit after 5 years of being in Switzerland or since being on a B permit?

Hi,

Has anybody applied for an EU-C permit with family / kids? Do you have to supply the Betreibungsamt report + criminal record for each family member?

It could get quite pricey with each document X 5.

Also, they (Zurich Immigrationsamt) have sent renewals for a B permit. I thought a C was automatic after 5 years.

Thanks in advance.

I received a B permit renewal form too - filled it in (i.e. had to tick one box which said I was still working) and sent it back. C permit came after a couple of days. No other forms or documents were requested.

Re: C Permit after 5 years of being in Switzerland or since being on a B permit?

On a slightly off topic note, I have lived in Vaud for 4 years and now moved to Geneva. I will get a new permit B. However, will I need to wait for another five years for a C or will Geneva count the four years in Vaud?

Reading this, it seems like they will but it varies between cantons.

Thanks for the help.

EC/EFTA if we're being precise. Norway and Iceland aren't EU. And the American "special regulation".
Actually applies to Canadians too. A colleague who was registered with a yearly renewable B for 7 years with his NZ nationality qualified for a C as soon as he re-registered with his Canadian passport.

Personally as EU-Irish I got my C after moving from Zurich (5+ years) to Bern. Bern blamed Zürich but honoured the regulation. I just had to supply a short letter and a copy of my employment contract. The Gemeindeamt sent everything on. No-one asked for proof I was solvent, (but maybe the Gemeinde sent a covering letter). I'd originally enquired by phone to the Migrationsamt.

things seem to have changed ? An Australian colleague and a Canadian colleague were recently asked to furnish a language certificate...i guess it is still different rules for different people depending on who is processing the application..?

Re: C Permit after 5 years of being in Switzerland or since being on a B permit?

Hello all,

This is a very useful thread. I wonder if anyone can give any insights to the following twist on the OP's original question:

I left Switzerland last year having been sent on assignment by my employer abroad. Crucially, my B permit was not cancelled, but 'frozen'. (apparently this is quite unusual - and I still actually have the orignal permits in my possession).

Does anyone have any experience with this?

What I would like to know is whether this means when I return to Switzerland, my 5 years wait period for a C will continue from the point when I left, or start again when I return.

Could I even apply for a C permit on the basis of the 5 year period having been completed whilst I am out of the country??

Thanks

Ddejay
