De-Register Geneva ; Register Zurich

Can any one run me through the procedure?

Which office, forms, web sites, appointments, oh and im sure fees.

My plan is to de register on the 31 December and register on 1 January, this would in my mind allow my taxes to be clean. Starting a fresh year. This is how my mind works, does anyone know why this would not be the case or a good idea?

Thanks for any/all your assistance.

Re: De-Register Geneva ; Register Zurich

what are you trying to do? Avoid paying tax?

Anyway, you just turn up and have your permit cancelled then take the cancelled permit to whichever place in Zurich you need to register and do so.

You pay tax wherever you are domiciled on 31st December 2014 so that will be Geneva.

Re: De-Register Geneva ; Register Zurich

Im trying to make life as easy as possible. So I dont want to pay 11 months tax in Geneva and 1 months tax in Zurich. I would rather pay 12 months in Geneva and start the new year fresh in zurich.

Its the whole turning up, canceling and re activating im looking for advise on. Turn up where? Cancel where? I cant believe I walk in one office in GVA with permit, get a stamp, walk in another office in Zurich and get a stamp and thats it.

I assume forms, documents, appointments are required?

Re: De-Register Geneva ; Register Zurich

Are you EU?

Non EU Zurich may not issue a permit or the same permit.

The way things are going, even EU may not get a B.

Re: De-Register Geneva ; Register Zurich

You will pay all tax in one canton for any year. They may adjust between them but you pay wherever you are resident on 31.12 of the year.

So you can deregister now and register in Zurich if you want.

Re: De-Register Geneva ; Register Zurich

Moving from Basel to Zurich in 2010 - we had a letter on the doormat of our new apartment from the local Kreisburo inviting us to come in and do admin to register and get our C permits switched over. Presumably Geneva will do it similarly.

Well, for a start everywhere official will be closed on the 1st January and Zurich will be on the 2nd. So the earliest you're going to be able to register is the 5th.

You can deregister a fair while ahead iirc, while still giving the actual date as being the 31st December. Check with your commune admin office.

Re: De-Register Geneva ; Register Zurich

Good news, if you register in Zurich before the 31/12/2014, you will be several thousand francs richer!!!

As Sean Connery mentioned, you are liable for taxes in the canton where you reside on the 31/12/2014 for all of 2014. It doesn't make sense, but it's the law (not many people are aware of that).

Since you have a C permit, then you will be filing your tax returns in March next year. If you are registered in Zurich for 2014 (i.e. you moved and registered before 31/12/2014), you will *only* file a tax return in canton Zurich. If you register in January 2015, you will pay your taxes for 2014 instead in canton Geneva.

In the former case, you will most likely save several thousand francs in the process (the income tax rate in Zurich being lower than in Geneva). You can easily calculate the tax savings on http://en.comparis.ch/steuern/steuer...h/default.aspx

If you're unsure, I advice you to get in touch with an accountant, who will tell you the exact same thing. 150 CHF is well worth the information he will provide. You will also need to contact the respective communes to make sure you register and de-register on time, don't leave it to the last minute.
