B type permit & travel

Hi all,

Apologies is this question has been asked before.

I am a EU and my wife is a non EU and we are moving from South Africa to Ticino in January. On arrival I am registering with local canton for a type B permit through my Employer and my Wife will be on my permit as she won't be working......to this point I have no concerns but if I've missed something, please let me know but my question is: on / having B type permit will my Wife be allowed to travel freely in EU countries and be able to visit UK where here Sister is living?

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Re: B type permit & travel

With residence permit, she'll be allowed to travel within Schengen countries, and this doesn't include the UK.

Re: B type permit & travel

A couple of points. Have you already applied via your employer for a permit for your wife under family reunification? I ask because there are certain conditions that need to be met by you for this to happen.

In addition she will need a Type D visa to be able to enter Switzerland long term legally so if she hasn't applied at the embassy/consulate in SA yet she really needs to do that asap.

Once she has a Swiss permit she will be able to travel in the Schengen Area countries freely.

However, this does NOT include the UK/Ireland and she will need to apply for the appropriate visa at the UK embassy here in Switzerland.

Re: B type permit & travel

Hi all. Well we are now in TI and awaiting B permit to be issued but we still battling to understand if my non EU wife can travel to the UK to visit her Sister without needing a UK visa as she is my Spouse and has a B type permit by the time she travels end March.

After much searching we found an option of EEA Family Permit, does anybody have experience with this type of travel document?

Thank you for your time.

Grazie Mille

No, she cannot travel to the UK using her passport and Swiss permit as the UK is not part of the Schengen Area Agreement. She would still need a visa to visit the UK using this method.

As far as the EEA permit goes, it looks possible.

Unless I'm over simplifying things, holding a Swiss residency permit doesn't make any changes to your nationality or the nature of your passport, so if you needed a visa before then you will still need a visa.

Not true. South African living in South Africa needs a visa to visit Germany. South African living in Switzerland doesn't as the permit takes the place of the visa. It's the same for all Schengen Area countries. A South African living in Germany can visit Switzerland without needing a visa.

UK/Ireland are not part of the Schegen Area so a visa is still needed in this case - or a EEA family permit.
