Not saying that this is the case... but my roommate just had his permit renewed. When he went to the Kreiseburo they told him that he had to pay 95 CHF instead of 65 CHF (he assumed they raised the prices at the beginning of the year). When the new permit came in he received a letter saying he needed to bring with him a new picture so he went to the little machine and had 4 new pictures made. He arrived at the Kreiseburo and was surprised to find out that 1. not only was his old picture fine but 2. the real reason he had to come was that they accidently overcharged him - it should have only been 65 CHF.
I think you are wise for going to the Krieseburo first to see what the real issue is... apparently they are sometimes confused

Hmmm, I just had to renew my permit and got slugged the chf95 as well, instead of the previous chf65-. Hope I get one of those invitations as well
Went down to the local Kreisburo to pick up my C permit (woohoo it's like moving up to high school!) and they gave me the chf30 refund. Though from the groans and mumbles of the processing bureaucrat, I would have gladly left it as a tip

Re: Photo for Ausweiss

I just arrived in CH. When I registered at the Gemeinde, I gave them a US passport-spec photo from a photo studio in the US. They accepted it without a word. I was pleasantly surprised.

Then, my employer got a letter from the Migrationsamt Aargau (to whom the Gemeinde had forwarded my stuff) with my photo attached, asking me to go to the Gemeinde with a Swiss-spec conformant photo Apparently the new credit card format residency card is a big deal and so they're being pickier about the photos...

So, I found Foto Eckert (http://www.fotoeckert.ch) at the Brugg train station. CHF 40 for 8 photos. The girl took a few shots of me and then printed 8 copies of the best choice. She even switched from Swiss to High German for me without my asking, complimented me on my lousy German, and wished me luck They have my negative on file and I can get more prints in the future...
