Residence Permit when in Zurich for EU citizens - police report in UK?

Hi all,

As part of my move to Zurich my wife and I will need to get a residence permit once we're in Zurich. One of the requirements is a police report for the last 12-months.

We've been living in the UK (me 9 years, her 3 years) and have been in London the whole time, living in Islington the last 3 years. I'm a US/UK she's a US citizen.

I called Islington met police and they told me to file a subject access - info on this form here (PDF)

Has anyone done this? I'm very hesitant on sending through passport/drivers license and other sensitive documentation. There is no mention of an SLA anywhere - we are moving in less than a month and can't afford to be without our passports and need this sorted quickly.

What have you done to get your police report so you can get your residence permit in Zurich? fyi we plan on living in Zurich/Seefeld area not in any other cantons.

Thanks in advance!

I understand they are asking for photo copies, and they will ask for original documents where necessary,

We reserve the right to request original documentation in some cases. All original documents will be returned by post
.

This is the London police so I would think sending original documents by registered post would be safe.

If necessary ask them for an address, and fly there and show them the originals.

I'm actually in London - I would gladly show up at the police station however on their website it says this must be done by post

I was assuming original documents to be sent in as it says original documents to be returned by post...can anyone comment if they have had to submit their original documents?

I'm trying to see what other people on the forum have experienced...no clue how long this takes?

Surly everyone has gone through this process as EU citizens still need to file for a permit?

I believe you can sign an affidavit as an
alternative solution.I only found out about this option
after I already organised and recieved the police report.

Cannot comment if you need the originals or not but the Post Office offers a service where they will verify a photocopy as being a true copy of the original. For a fee of course.

Does anyone know the name of this permit? Trying to search for others who would have had to undergo the same experience... there are lots of UK/EUs working in Zurich, surely they would have had to get a police report? or was it simply an affidavit?

One of the requirements is a police report for the last 12-months.
This is rather strange, EU citizens and their non-EU family members moving to Switzerland under the free movement agreement do not normally have to provide such a document. This has been the case since the agreement entered into force, i.e. 2002 at least.

The Swiss may require a police report in exceptional cases justified on grounds of public order / security.

[see Section 2.4.2, page 25, in German]
https://www.bfm.admin.ch/dam/data/bf...ngen-fza-d.pdf

Either they have a very specific reason why they want the report(s) or you are not actually entering under the Free Movement Agreement. I can imagine that if you both applied as Americans and/or only your wife actually had a job offer you could end up treated as Americans.

So my wife is the one that's being asked for the police report because she is currently going through the visa/permit process. She has received the visa in her US passport received at the Swiss embassy in London. Next step for her is to apply for the permit to allow her to work in Switzerland - it's this step where she is being told she needs a police report. Can anyone else comment on this??

Me being a UK/EU I have not been asked to provide a police report but I haven't yet gone through the permit step - I know I need to do the same once we arrive in Zurich hence why I'm trying to do any paperwork whilst still in the UK.

Can anyone else share their experiences? thanks.

Just wondering if anyone else can comment? Her swiss visa in the US passport says "Raisons familiales". Just trying to figure out if I need this police report!

Weird, I have never been asked for a Police report… lots of other random things, but never a police report.

This is not in Zurich but...I am American and my husband is Swiss. We were told we needed a U.S. police report, so we got one. Then they never asked for it when we actually applied for the permit and turned in the rest of the paperwork.

Maybe it changed in 15 years and it was Basel, not Zurich - I really don't recall us being asked to produce a police record from the UK when we first moved over and got our B permits.

I think it's a requirement for non EU citizens.
