Schengen Questions

Hello,

I am a US citizen with a one-year au pair visa for Germany. At the end of that one year, when the German visa expires, can I enter Switzerland for 3 months as a tourist, or does my time in Germany count towards those three months?

Thanks!

Re: Schengen Questions

The au pair visa does not count against your tourist time. Once that ends, the very next day the clock starts on your 90 days in Shengen, regardless of which member country you choose.

Do you need to leave schengen and re-enter?

Re: Schengen Questions

You have been living in Germany as a resident, not a tourist, so you should be okay for 3 months after your contract finishes. Make sure you have both a copy of your employment contract and German visa so any border guard who asks can see the dates when you were working in Germany, otherwise you might get told off/fined for overstaying if you can't prove your au pair status.

In OP's specific circumstance, I believe not. We've had American members who ran out of permit time here and went straight into tourist time without leaving, so I imagine it would be similar for OP. However Medea raises a valid point - OP needs to ensure all her paperwork is in order so she doesn't run into problems with accusations of overstaying.

Re: Schengen Questions

Thanks for the quick responses everyone! So as long as I can prove I was a tourist for no longer than 3 months, I won't get kicked out of Switzerland for life (which is good, if I hope to live there in the future)! Good to know.

Re: Schengen Questions

Yes, it shouldn't be a problem. Your passport will show when you entered Germany to take up your position and having the contract/German visa will show you weren't here as a tourist so haven't overstayed. Just make sure you leave on or before the 30th day after you become a tourist again.

Oops! Brain melted down at that point. Make sure you leave on or before the 90th day.
