Type of B permit for postdoc at ETH (Zurich)

I will soon finish my PhD and possibly continue as a postdoc as soon as my contract is up (without interruption). My HOPE is for the B permit to change from the "education employment" one to the "normal" (employment) one, so that after two years I can apply for a C permit. For a US person the C permit can be applied for after 5 years with B, and the first three may be from an education B permit but the last two must be a normal B permit - therefore it's imperative that I get a "normal" B permit if I want to get a C permit after two years.

Does anyone have any experience with this? From searching I have found conflicting information, depending on which canton is being discussed, however I have not been able to find anything about how this is handled in Zurich. Probably it depends on the canton as well as luck, but first-hand experience would be helpful, as chances are whatever was done in Zurich before would be repeated.

Alternatively, I might try to formulate my contract as a "normal" job (not postdoc) with the same salary etc., but for this I would need to take advantage of the special status one gets after studying (equal access to jobs as a Swiss person) when one gets the special "job seeking permit".. however, the idea would be to go directly from B to B, and not drop down temporarily to L (because time at L resets the clock for C permit back to zero!!).

Such a mess.

Any advice or info is very welcome and appreciated.

Re: Type of B permit for postdoc at ETH (Zurich)

No experience, but I would assume that this may need to meet the non-EU hiring rules in which case there's no guarantee of a B. If the quota is used up then it will be an L. Or it could fall under the recent graduate regulation and then your position needs to show a scientific/economic benefit to Switzerland.

Regardless of whether you think it's imperative or not, the Swiss authorities will give you whichever permit they think is suitable depending on contract, quotas, etc.

Best is to ask the Zurich migration office and also your HR Department/professor about what chances for a B permit you may have for those two options.
