C permit Requirements

Hello,

I am sure this has been cearly written somewhere so if someone can direct me I would appreciate it. I am an EU citizen with a B permit and I would like to eventually apply for a C permit in a few years so I assme I need to pick up my French skills which I will start soon. As an old EU citizen, am I exempt from a language requirement in some cantons and which ones? I know it is better that we do but will my husband need the same level as me?

My next question is if we move closer to my employer and I have to change cantons and towns, will I be exempt from qualifying for a C permit? If we do move now, we will not be living in the same place for over 3 years? I believe I read that somewhere... Point being there is some pressure from my employer to move closer so I would just like to make sure I don't jeapardize my chances for a C. I think I was told by my commune a year ago to get a second residence closer to work and keep my main residence where we are but that is an expensive option...

Thanks for your help as finding answers has been problematic for us.

Re: C permit Requirements

Language requirement: depends on the canton, Zurich definitely need you to have a certain level, not sure which others do. Some EU nationalities are exempt: Belgium, Germany, Denmark, France, Liechtenstein, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Spain. Anyone who applies for a C permit in a canton that needs a language certificate will need to produce one from a recognised language instititue.

When applying for a C permit, it doesn't matter where you live in Switzerland, only if you want to later apply for naturalisation. Then there are Federal, cantonal and communal residency requirements - these are in the process of being harmonised in preparation for the new naturalisation law being put into force late 2016/early 2017.

Sorry if I have misunderstood... Do you mean that people from the aforementioned countries do not need to comply with the language requirements?

Re: C permit Requirements

Yes, if you are from one of those countries, you do not need to show a language certificate at a certain level in Kanton Zurich

Re: C permit Requirements

I understand you are in Vaud Lausanne so there is no need for language DELF DALF to go from B to C if you are from EU countries as said above. Just write on the form you would like a permit C. In all cases talk to your commune. they are happy to help in my experience.

FYI, for anyone else in future, Kanton Aargau invited us (German and UK nationals) to have a C permit 5 years after the B permit and didn't require anything special, just employer's details and a signature.
