| | Can you leave Switzerland after becoming Swiss?
Hello,
does someone know whether you can leave Switzerland temporarily right after getting Swiss passport? Or is there a minimum residence requirement after getting Swiss passport? I do not need to leave forever, but need to live in Spain for one year and officially declare departure from CH, so I can cancel my insurance and other contracts.
Thank you!

Absolutely not; they don't call Switzerland the Hotel California of Europe for nothing, you know. | The following 5 users would like to thank PaddyG for this useful post: | |

You can leave without giving it up so why would you?
As far as I know, no you can't. It can be revoked by the government, but only if you've committed treason or similar - in which case you'll be thrown into jail as well I expect.

As far as I know, anyone can relinquish citizenship as long as they have another citizenship -- the Swiss government will not allow its citizens to become stateless.
But yeah, why would you want to?

Yes, you're right 22 yards. There is a mechanism for requesting loss of Swiss citizenship. B.Loss by Official Decree a.Relief of Citizenship Art.42 1 A Swiss citizen shall on request be relieved of his or her Swiss citizenship if he or she is not resident in Switzerland and holds or has been assured of another nationality. For minors, Article 34 applies mutatis mutandis. 2 Relief is granted by the authority in the canton of origin. 3 Loss of cantonal and communal citizenship and thus of Swiss citizenship take effect on service of the certificate of relief of citizenship. https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...0000/141.0.pdf |

Hi Jacky 333, I was following your other thread about the naturalisation process and was wondering if I could ask, how long did it take after receiving all 3 OKs (commune, canton and federal) till the ceremony? I'm at that stage and just want to know roughly how much longer so I can plan. Thanks!!

Hi! It took 1 year and 2 months to get all OKs.
There was a problem though at the stage before ceremony: although I had 3 OKs, my file could not be sent for ceremony because my permit expired in due course. So there was a huge delay, I had my 3 OKs in May, but got officially naturalised at the ceremony on 1st December. However, having all 3 OKs in just 13-14 months was a result of hard work of calling, writing, persisting... So it really depends on each particular case. | Quote: | | | | | Hi Jacky 333, I was following your other thread about the naturalisation process and was wondering if I could ask, how long did it take after receiving all 3 OKs (commune, canton and federal) till the ceremony? So if you are Swiss, you are free to do whatever you want | | | | | The word "whatever" is not really suitable for what you probably want to say
Actually you can travel outside of Switzerland even before you get a Swiss passport, just in case you didn't dare to do so for the last 10 years |

Dear JamesTr,
I obviously traveled lots of times before I became Swiss, by the way, you should not leave the country for more than 5 consecutive months if you want a Swiss passport. But once you get something that you have been dreaming of for last 5 years (in my case a little red book with a white cross), you are very scared to lose it or do something wrong. That is why I was asking just to be sure. | Quote: | | | | | The word "whatever" is not really suitable for what you probably want to say
