| | B permit renewal for contract less than a year
Hello Everybody,
I have been reading these forums for a while now, and am posting my first thread since I cannot find information specific to my case.
I am working here since three years now, the first two on a L permit, then since last year on a B permit.
I work at a research institute, and my contract is renewed one year at a time, currently till Dec 15, and my B permit is also till then. I was expecting a renewal for 2016, but due to anticipated funding not materializing, I have been told my contract will be renewed only for three months till Mar 16 so the existing projects can be completed.
I would like to know what happens with my permit renewal now.
Will it be renewed for a year like a non-EU B permit typically is, or will it be only for three months? Can I ask for a one year renewal to get time to look for a job?
Due to the three month contract, can they change it back to a L?
Will I be eligible to use some unemployment insurance?

No, it will be a 3 month L permit and then you'll probably be expected to leave the country. It certainly won't be a renewal of the B as your permit is tied to your employer and that will finish in March 2016, so no you can't extend it either - only an employer can do that. Start looking for another job here and maybe you'll be able to switch to that when the other one runs out next March.

Thank you for the reply
Are you sure that the permit will be converted from a B to a L?

Pretty sure. Your contract is tied to your employer. If the contract is for less than a year an L permit is the norm. I suppose they may simply extend the B, but it would only be for a further 3 months, not a year.

At the risk of this being considered necropsying, I was wondering if anyone had a definitive answer to gurgeh's original question, namely:
If a non-EU B permit holder receives a contract extension of less than a year, 1: will the permit holder receive a permit?
2: if so, for what duration?
3: if so, whether it will still be a B permit I was about to message gorge privately but see that they last posted more than 3 years ago.

Thanks roegner. Do you have a source of data for those conclusions? Or know of someone who has been in that situation?

HTH | | | | | Thank you gurgeh! It's great to hear what actually happened to you.
Speaking of which, after that 3 month extension, did you try to stay any additional time, for vacation or to look for a job or anything? Or did you leave right at the end of that 3 months?
