Thinking about moving to Switzerland again

Hi,

I used to live and work in Geneva, but then left the country few years ago due to family reasons. I've returned my B permit and left the country "officially" - i.e. returned B permit, informed authorities and got a special letter from them...

Will the fact I've already lived there help me to get a new B-permit? I'm looking for a job in Switzerland now - Senior IT specialist, Canadian nationality.

Thanks!

I think that regardless of having lived here before, once you de-register and then go away for years then the only thing that will help you get a permit is getting another solid job offer... you'll start from scratch.

No. Previous residence makes no difference whatsoever. As a non-EU national it's a pre-approved job offer or marriage to a Swiss/EU national as your options. And the hiring of non-EU nationals is time consuming and expensive for employers.

I meant of course - "....if I would find a new employer in Switzerland - would this fact help (a bit) to get a permit?".

I did not have much hope for this - asking just in case if someone already had a similar experience...

Thanks!

Could you please add your experience to the thread Canada vs. Switzerland you've started back in 2007? Canada always looked greener to me :-)

I think that having Swiss professional history and credentials could help in terms of finding a new job - employers may see this as an advantage compared to someone who has none, for example. I am afraid though that it would not be a particular advantage in terms of getting a work visa.

The answer is still no. It's effectively a new application by an employer and it'll be judged on how well he's searched for a Swiss/EU national and not been able to find one, how well your skills/experience match the position, etc. If the job is in a different canton than the one you lived in before, there won't even be a record for them to check until it reaches Federal level.

Not at all I'm afraid.

We're going through the same at the moment. My partner worked here 2009-2011, then moved to the UK (where we met a few days after he arrived). He always talked about the possibility of coming back to Switzerland, and we've been here for a month now, owing to him being recruited.

My partner's previous B permit has made absolutely no difference, and we're both going through the process from the beginning. The previous one is on record, but we've been told by the local Kreisburo and Immigration that it makes no difference.

I will one day.

Shortly - Canada is a good country for life.
I want to move back, due to family reasons.

Thanks!

Excellent answer!
Thank you, Blueangel!

As a senior IT specialist you should not have any problems getting an offer or getting a permit. There is always a huge demand for IT.

Except when there's not.
