Visa for PhD student from India

Hello Folks!!

I am applying for a type D visa from India. I have a PhD offer (full time research) from Uni Basel which will start from July 1st. I will apply for the visa at Embassy on 24th April. So what are the chances of getting visa before time?
I have not yet finished my Master's here in India and a graduation ceremony is expected to take place in June. Will this affect my visa application? ( I have received following documents from Uni- 1) a contract letter 2) Justification letter from my supervisor about my selection over swiss candidates 3) AHV number details)

I don't know what you mean by "before time", but whether you get a visa or not depends on whether you get a permit or not. If the Swiss authorities don't agree that you're better than any other candidates the university has put forward then you won't get the job, the permit or the visa.

Re: Visa for PhD student from India

What does "before time" mean?

It's unlikely you'll be considered without proof that you have completed your Masters, i.e. you very likely need to wait after you have the actual diploma in hand so that a copy can be sent to authorities. Confirmation of degree completion is normally not sufficient. The application process takses at least 6-8 weeks from the time all documents have been handed in. If your graduation is in June, I don't see you starting in July, but maybe you'll get lucky.

And of course your eligibility depends on whether there's any qualified Swiss/EU/EFTA candidates. If there are not, you have a chance.

You or rather your prospective employer is not applying for a D visa (or so I hope). You're applying for a work permit. The D visa is not a work permit. A D visa allows you to enter the country. It does not allow you to work. I wouldn't be aware of any non-EU citizen to be able to apply for their permit themselves, so Uni Basel needs to do that for you. You need to wait in your home country for the permit to be approved, i.e. even IF you did get a D visa upfront in some way or anoterh, you cannot come here, let alone start working here, before you have approval of your work permit.

Re: Visa for PhD student from India

I think my post is being misunderstood. I am not applying myself for work permit. University has already started that procedure there after I gave them required documents and they did not ask for the final diploma certificate. I am just applying for the visa D from my country and I do not know whether they need a final diploma certificate or not. And before time means before I intend to start my PhD. Visa appointment is on 24th April (9 weeks ahead of a program start date)

Re: Visa for PhD student from India

As per the checklist for Student Visa-D (meant only for entry into Switzerland) application from India, it seems a copy of the diploma certificates will be required (check URL below):

https://www.vfsglobal.ch/switzerland...ays_220115.pdf

However, you can clarify the situation by calling the helpline either at the New Delhi or Mumbai Embassy in this context before you send across the documents. I would be surprised if you're the first one to come across this situation.

If all goes well, you could receive the entry visa well ahead of time before the course start date. Make sure all the documents are forwarded as requested to avoid any delays in the administrative processing and the rest is out of your hands. Good luck!!

As said: yes, chances are you do.

Without it, the application will likely be on hold anyway.

Re: Visa for PhD student from India

This information is for everyone who stumbles upon this post expecting for the answers. As I have already gone through it, here is the summary

1. Apply for the national visa D (the 'entry' visa) at the embassy with the documents required and justify the unavailability of any needed document in the cover letter
2. Wait for 40-45 days for the authorisation letter from the embassy, then submit the passport at the nearest VFS global (with prior online appointment) for the visa to be stamped on the passport
3. Enter in the Switzerland and do the matriculation in the university as a student. At this point the masters degree certificate and a complete transcript is a must (At least at the University of Basel)
4. With the matriculation certificate apply for the B permit at the cantons migrations office, usually within 14 days of your entry in the country.
5. Last but not the least, each canton has different procedures as the canton has more powers than the federal state. Welcome to the Switzerland! So don’t be surprised to find some differences in the steps mentioned above along the way.

Hope these points will be helpful for #Indians #PhD students #visa type D applicants.
