C permit for family?

Hi,
Suppose I get a C permit because of my job. What will the permit of my wife be? She is a student.

Re: C permit for family?

I think that depends where she is from. If she is non-EU probably also a C. If she is EU I believe a B. But how will your job give you a C permit?

Re: C permit for family?

You will get a C right off the bat if you are hired in Switzerland as a full professor by either Kantonal or federal universities. There may be other instances as well such as equivalent status in research institutes.

In the case of a professor, your spouse and children (under 18, i think) also get C permits.

In this case your spouse and children get C permits if they are nonEU. If they are EU only the children get C permits while the spouse gets a B. 😬

Really? being non-EU is actually beneficial somewhere?

I am not a professor. What about other jobs?

I am EU and have C (due to OH's job) AFAIK children who are over 12 get B, irrelevant of EU/non EU

My son got a C as hubby had one and he was over 12 at the time. I am EU and I got a B.

Maybe it's another one of those cantonal things.

You're probably right. When we arrived hubby and kids got a C while I got a B. We're all EU.

AFAIK full professor is the only job that will give you a C permit straight away. Otherwise you have to tough it out for at least 5 years and work on integrating.

Why do/did you think I'm going to get a C permit "right away"? Suppose I've been here for enough years and fulfilled required step.

Because in your OP you said 'supposing I get a C permit because of my job' and the only time when that would be a possibility would be on arrival if your job was one of the ones to get an automatic C permit.

All other C permits are awarded due to length of stay, length of stay plus integration or possibly marriage to a Swiss national.

Your phrasing in the first post. I (and others) interpreted it to mean that you thought it was the job that would get you the permit. It reads like it's a new job and a new permit for you, and as you're a new member we connect the dots based on experience.

Edit - BM types faster.

Sorry about the wording then.

Re: C permit for family?

Just had a quick read through this thread.

Is my understanding correct, only the parent who is earning in the family needs the language requirements?

Reason I ask is that my wife and I both recently did the B2 exam. We don't have the results yet but I am reasonably confident I passed. My wife not so.

Therefore, our current thinking is that me and the kids can get our C permit and my wife will have to wait until she has her language cert...

Nope you are not correct. The accompanying spouse needs to fulfil the language requirements.

That's what I thought. Worse case I guess me and the kids can apply and my wife apply later when she does get the language cert?

Also I note I need some kind of confirmation from the school for the kids....not sure what that is tho, I'll give the migration office a call tomorrow.

Why did you do B2? From here:

"The canton of Zug requires the language level A2 for written skills and the level B1 for verbal skills."

We are learning the language regardless, nice to get our permit of course but it's not the primary motivation.

Also, that document is slightly out of date. ZG language requirements are even lower now....something like A2 for verbal and A1 for written.
