NON EU short term stay after L Permit Expires

Hi guys,

I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm a Non EU residing in Lausanne and My residence permit L Expires tomorrow 31/10/2016. I have an urgent function that i have to attend to on the 2/11/2016 (2 days after my permit expires) which is vital and i have to be physically present. I have been told that i can ask for an extension for a week to enable me to attend the function but i've sent numerous emails to the Foreign Migration office in Vaud for confirmation and got no response. Due to the nature of my schedule over the past 2 weeks, i did not get an opportunity to visit the migration office personally to make this inquiry. This is worrying because if i go and announce my departure tomorrow, will i have to leave Switzerland immediately or can they grant me a few more days or indicate on the attestation de depart certificate that i can stay for a few more days to enable me to attend the event? also would i need to pay any costs to have the extension granted? Please help as this is very urgent. Thanks. Chris

Depends on your nationality. If you're one of those nationalities who don't need a tourist visa to visit Switzerland then you'll be all right to stay a few more days. If you do need a tourist visa, then get down to the migration office first thing tomorrow and sort it out. E-mails are no good for this sort of thing, you need to do it in person. And yes, you'll probably have to pay something for the extension if you get it.

This is not 100% kosher. Since I was in such a situation few years ago, I had to make a lot of official inquiries. If you are non EU, you *have* to leave the Schengen area before your permit expires regardless of your nationality. I was advised to go to UK and come back the day after the permit has expired. The 6 month counter would start from that point onward.

You would probably get away for staying few days over, but you might also get blacklisted for some time. Not worth the risk. Immigration issues take #1 priority unless you serious medical emergency to deal with. If you were simply busy with work then I am sorry to say but your priorities are misplaced.

Re: NON EU short term stay after L Permit Expires

Hi guys,

I wanted to update you on my situation. First of all, my Advice to everyone is to always go to the Migration office, they are very helpful and as long as you have a genuine reason why you need the extension, they will grant it (I'm speaking about my experience with the VAUD Office). I went to them and explained why i needed to stay a few extra days, showed them my documents and they granted me a week's extension on a Visa D stamped onto my passport but i had to pay CHF 67 for it. I was very impressed with the service. They were very helpful, they speak English and it took less than an hour to get the Visa. I really think that if anyone is in a similar situation, the best advice is to go to the Visa office. They actually like it if you approach them and explain your case. I dont think that they will have any issues with anyone, regardless of whether your from the EU or Third State Nationals as they call it. I'm happy to say that i think the Swiss Immigration System is one of the best, if not the Best in the World having traveled in very many Countries.
