Welcome to English Forum Gautam ...
Have you had chance to read through the sticky at the beginning of this section? There are tonnes of information available there.
Take time and go through it, I am sure you will find someone or the other who has had same question asked before and you would have your answer. This specific topic has been beaten to death, since everyone one of us here in the forum probably faced the same or a different variant.
If not, then of course there are plenty of help available here.
When you are writing your questions be sure to mention that you are Non-EU or not (going by your name you sound to be indian, but of course I may be wrong.)
Hope you get your solutions soon .. |

There is not hard and fast rule.
As far as my knowledge goes, it could both be L Permit as well as B Permit. Depending on which one is available. Sometimes, they run out of B permits for a year and then give L Permit. The differences between these two you can get in the sticky.
Again B permit could be two different types - project related, which is highly possible in your case, and permanent. The former is slightly constricted than the latter, which "may" affect your wife's chances with a job. But I cannot stress enough that all this discussion is HIGHLY speculative, till you actually get your VISA. You cannot plan ahead a lot regarding this matter, I am afraid. Each one is left guessing till the end and sometimes even after that.
Just my two pence, since you are so eager to know what happens. But everything is dealt with case basis, and it might be totally different in yours.
All the best ... |

Visa gives you the right to enter the country. Within some time you have to visit commune and pass your documents to obtain your B permit (or L, it depends on which permit your company applied for).
So, after you get the Visa, the first thing you do when you appear in Geneve is to visit commune and fill the arrival form. They can ask you to pay fee for creation of permit, in canton de vaud it was ~ 90 CHF, in Geneve it could be different. After that you wait, wait, wait ... And finally you recieve your B permit. For me it took 1 month since the moment I came into Switzerland.

Thanks Volodymry
I shall keep that in mind. Just a question... how long you had to wait before you heard the decision for your application (Work permit application)?

My case was a bit special, as I signed the contract (sent using DHL) and company told I will got all documents done (on Swiss side) within a month or two. So far so good ... It took 1 year for all documents preparations on Swiss side . Just because my motherland (Ukraine) was in past a part of Soviet Union the relations between Switzerland and Ukraine are pretty cold even now.
So, after a year I was told that I can go to Swiss embassy in Kiev and get my visa. So I did. I came there at, and I was told, that Swiss Embassy in Kiev has to check whether I really got a permit B, and it would take a few months more... So it took also 1.5 months on Ukrainian side once I got a visa and entered the country.

Thanks once again Volodymyr
My case sounds somewhat similar to yours. As my document are being processes in Swizterland itself. I had to DHL my side of paperwork like application n all.
So by sounds of it ( form your application expericence) we are looking at 1-2 months max?
Let's see... it's a matter of wait n watch i suppose |

1 month is something ideal ... And here it does not work like that .
The decsition is taken on several levels: cantonal (goverment of canton) and federal (in Bern). They have huge queue, and they also have quata, I dont know exact values, but I started the process in October and later the company reapplied in January because I was out of quata.
Finally, when I had positive quata, company officials were told that they have to give more provements that they really need to hire me. Before company told that they cant find candidate in CH and in EU countries with the same level of expierience. Even thought, the officials wanted more proof because I was quite young and according to local mentality, young people can not be too bright
Luckily, at that time and now, I was holding this award: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ so company used this fact to push my profile |

Good News
OCIRT office has approved the application.
Application is with Federal Office of Migration (ODM).
Question: Does ODM also evaluate the application as OCIRT?
Many thanks in advance.
