Slight extension of Permit L - after exchange studies

Hi, so I was just researching some stuff and realized what could be a potential issue,

So i will be in Switzerland for a short 5 months exchange studies for which according to seniors who've been before - usually a 'L' permit. Now, my school term officially ends on the 8th July (last day of exams).

My question is when will my permit be valid until usually ? Will the validity date be tacked to the end of the school term, give or take a few days? Or will it be based on the date that I inform the canton of my departure ?

This is because for now, my plane tickets are booked for 20th of July out of Geneva. I'm a non-EU national & I don't have visa-free access to Schengen so I'd have to leave Switzerland (& Schengen) when the residence permit expires.

If let's say it's the end of my school term (e.g. 10th July for instance), would it be possible to ask the canton to have it expire on the day of my flight ? I will still be resident in Switzerland up to my departure flight because the lease for my accommodation can only end at end of the month (i.e. 31st July).

Re: Slight extension of Permit L - after exchange studies

End of school term and I doubt it'll include give or take a few days. Still, if you've already got your return ticket booked and can show them the ticket you could ask at the migration office if the permit be could extended to that date when you go to get the permit issued to you.

Thanks yeah I have my return ticket booked. Just to be clear I should request for this when I first put in the request for the permit application right? Upon presenting myself to the population office?

Yes, when you go to get the permit issued. It's already been approved, but it'll take a few weeks to actually get it as you'll need to provide biometric info a week or so after starting the process off. There's bound to be some paperwork to fill in, like where your Swiss address is as the permit will be mailed to you, so ask if the permit can be extended to the day of your flight back and show them the airline ticket at proof that it's already booked. Assuming it does end on or very soon after your school term ends. Check that first and if it's not long enough then ask for the extension. It may be they're generous and it's for 6 months, but if you ask exactly how long the permit's for you'll know whether you'll need to ask for the extension or not.

Make sure when you come to deregister that you use the date of your return flight for that too. You can deregister a couple of weeks before you actually leave; you simply tell them on the form what your deregistration date is. You don't have to do it "on the day" as it were.

I see, thanks for the detailed information very informative!

I will ask them how long it's valid for when I first present myself

Many thanks for the info on deregistering also, at least it's clearer now the main steps involved

Yeah, find out first and if it's not long enough ask them if it's possible to extend until your departure date. They may not of course, but if you ask and show them the ticket hopefully they'll agree.
