reference letter for C-permit application

I am from a non-EU (non-US) country, and have been in Switzerland since 10 years ago. I would like to apply C-permit soon. If I would like to have a reference letter from my boss and a reference my company, what content should they write? They are very supportive but have no idea what should be in there. Could you help me? Many thanks.

Do you need a reference letter when applying for a C permit?? Is that for non EU only? I never had to add anything apart from the regular documents (Betreibungsauskunft, letter confirming I was still employed, no social security)

Re: reference letter for C-permit application

Do you speak German? If not, forget it. That's one of the requirements to get a C permit in Zurich canton.

Do you have a reference for that?

I know several EU C permit holders with quite low German skills.

Yes, but then earlier you could apply for a C Permit without having to show your language skills with a certificate.

Citizens from certain countries are exempt from the language certificate requirement. The list has been posted before but I'm too lazy to find it at the moment.

They're all EU countries so won't be applicable to the OP. I can't be bothered to look them up either.

It's either A2 or B1 depending on whether you are EU or non EU.

Re: reference letter for C-permit application

Thank you all for your answer. If I get you correctly, 1. Language certificate is needed. 2. Reference letter is not required.

Ask Zurich immigration office whether a reference letter or motivation letter is needed.
In VS/VD/FR, no reference/motivation letter is needed in a normal C permit application after 10 years (which is your case). A motivation letter is required for early C permit after 5 years. In no case a reference letter from someone else (boss, employer...) is needed.
Check with ZH if it is also true for you.

In all fairness, someone with A2 German can't be said to speak German. In fact, I doubt someone with only an A2 command of German would be able to hold a remotely meaningful conversation.

Re: reference letter for C-permit application

First case:

Can someone please help to understand the following. The second case sentence is a little too heavy for me.

I have B1. But it's not hard to achieve - it can't be since my German is still dreadful.

Depends on your definition of meaningful. I'm in the A2 to B1 range (speaking). Although I can't debate the finer points of politics or discuss obscure body parts with the doctor, I can make myself understood in most daily situations and get by during dinner with the neighbors. I make a ton of mistakes but folks know what I'm trying to say. That's the point of having a certificate in A2, it shows you can get by in basic situations, not that you're defending a PhD thesis.
