C permit renewal when unemployed

Hello folks,

here is my situation in a couple of words:

my C-permit (Bern) expires next year. i think of quitting my job this year in order to study at Fachhochschule. i wonder if there is a chance that my C-permit is nor renewed or converted into a B? i'm a non-EU citizen.

many thanks in advance!

No. C permit is not dependent on the employment situation.

Re: C permit renewal when unemployed

Right. C permit is not dependent on your work. It should be renewed.

Partly yes, but if you already worked in Switzerland for specific period of time, you might have chance to be eligible for extension of c permit. Maybe you can also wait with quitting the job
I'd call immigration and really check with them what is really required. You got it already and shouldn;t be taken from you so easily, but... As longas you;re not EU or Schengen zone member this might be chellenging. Check with them directly what exactly is required (of course don;t mention that you;d like to quit the job.. )

Re: C permit renewal when unemployed

C permit, EU or NON-EU, by definition, cannot be associated with any condition (not like a B permit which can be associated with employment so you must be employed during renewal) . As long as you do not depend on social assistance, you can be unemployed and live in switzerland all your life if you have a C permit.

Also, under the current law, there is no such a thing that C permit downgraded to B (this is something which might happen with the future law if you are no longer integrated) . C permit cannot be downgraded but only be revoked, under well defined and very specific reasons (again nothing to do with employment situation)
