B Permit Student leaving CH 6 months

Hello everyone,

I am a Canadian student in Zurich and I have been offered an internship in Germany for 6 months. The internship is mandatory for my degree here in CH. I've read through old posts that state that in order to keep my B permit I can only leave for up to 6 months so my questions are as follows:

1. Do I need to specifically inform the City/Canton that I am leaving the country or is it enough to de-register at the local Kreisburo?

2. When do they start the 6 month count? If they start when I de-register does that mean I can inform the City I move out on June 30 but leave for Germany on June 15 and then the count only starts July 1? Does the count stop when I re-register?

3. How can I do 2? Can I de-register with the city remotely or give them an advance date?

4. Where can I read more? I can read German but prefer French if possible for the legalese

Thanks!

I assume for students there may be rules regarding such internships as your permit might be put "on hold" as it were. Talk to the uni's students/HR contact and also the cantonal migration office.

If your B permit doesn't need to be renewed while you're away and if you can afford to continue paying health insurance and if you have some Swiss address on which to receive mail then just don't deregister at all.
For 6 months it's probably the least hassle to just pretend you're still in Switzerland.

Thanks!
The foreign student adviser got back to me and it seems like the easiest solution is indeed to not de-register.

Re: B Permit Student leaving CH 6 months

Hi, I am in the same situation now, could you please let me know how did you resolve this? Was it OK in the end to be away for 6 months? Did you have to pay rent for your housing (to keep legal residence address for the permit) during those 6 months? Thanks!
