How long can you stay out of Switzerland before B permit becomes invalid

I have a friend (a non EU citizen) who left Switzerland 18 months ago but now wants to return. His B permit has not expired (still over a yeer until expiry) Can he re-enter Switzerland on that permit or is it invalidated due to the 18 month absence.

Or does he need to re-apply.
He still owns a house in Switzerland - does that help ?

As far as I know he didn't deregister

he was actually detained in his own country of citizenship and his passport seized for a period of 15 months. I don't know the details of why this occurred.

I guess if he comes back and tries to pick up where he left off, he'll have all sorts of uncomfortable questions about taxes and health insurance among other things if he didn't deregister, unless he kept up with it all from afar.
