| | Best way to get a Green Card
Hello everyone!
I just joined the forum
Instead of giving you a full story why, etc. I'm just gonna cut to the chase.
I just turned 18 in January. I have a High School diploma, and will start my apprenticeship as a computer scientist in August. (I technically had 3 gap years, 2 years internship, and 1 year language stays in the US and NZ). And after that I'm going to the army for another 2 years.
What's my best option to get hold of a green card and one day become a U.S. citizen?
I have an uncle and other relatives living there. doubt that'll help me though. And I'm also willing to join the Army (or any branch for that matter), if that'll get me anywhere lol. Actually I'd love to join.
Will try the DV-2019 lottery this year.
Cheers!
And yes, I'm sure.

The reason is I just wanna move away from Switzerland. It's a great country and all, but just not where I wanna spend my whole life at. A lot of my hobbies just aren't... you know, that nice here. Like shooting, probably the best exapmle. I love the beach, coasts, partiotism (I'm serious, I'd love to see some swiss patriotism... rarely any in existence...),... to each their own I guess.

You have to be a US citizen or Green Card holder to join the US army.
You won't qualify under the family option and may not do so under the job offer option either. https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/...urces/E2en.pdf
That will leave you with the lottery option only. https://www.uscis.gov/green-card/oth...t-visa-program
That's assuming Trump hasn't cancelled the Green Card and other visa options altogether of course.
Patriotism? Shouting about how great the States are all the time doesn't do it for me, especially when it's always coupled with praying to God for this and that and the other. Just because your fellow Swiss don't shout it from the rooftops doesn't mean they're less patriotic than Americans. They just go about it more quietly - as do other countries.
For the rest: beaches, coasts, shooting - try Canada. Just as proud of their country as the Americans, but don't feel the need to shout about it all the time.

How to get a Green card: - immigration through a family member
- immigration through employment
- immigration through investment (from 0.5 to 1 million US dollars)
- immigration through the Diversity Lottery
- immigration through refugee or asylum status
- immigration through "The Registry" provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act
- immigration approved by the Director of Central Intelligence

Here the best way: Get a Swiss Bachelor degree, apply for an U.S. Ph.D. program, get accepted, get the degree, work.
It is best because you aim for more than just a permit.
Or did you ask for the easiest way?

Yep that is kind of a contradiction lol.
I see more albanian flags that swiss hanging from windows and when I wanted to look for apprenticeships (was checking out a car dealership) I got made fun of because I was Swiss. lol. Not really an argument though.
But I grew up with a lot of America, if that makes sense, lots of relatives, etc. This whole "I don't like Switzerland" thing started at the age of 5. I never quite identified as a Swiss guy to be honest. All my stuff is in English, I specifically buy stuff from there, constantly forget words in German,...
yeah I'm a weird guy. My friends first thought I was crazy, but now they actually kinda support me.
I might actually be able to be offered a job in Connecticut, because my uncle owns the business. Are there any regulations? In terms of what jobs, size of the business, anything like that?

" EB-1Priority Workers
Aliens with extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics;
Outstanding professors and researchers;
Multinational executives and managers. EB-2 Professionals With Advanced Degrees or Persons With Exceptional Ability
Aliens who, because of their exceptional ability in the sciences, arts, or business, will substantially benefit the national economy, cultural, or educational interests or welfare of the United States;
Aliens who are members of professions holding advanced degrees or the equivalent. EB-3 Professional or Skilled Workers
Professionals with a baccalaureate degree;
Aliens capable of performing skilled labor (requiring at least 2 years of training or experience) for which qualified workers are not available in the United States;
Aliens capable of performing unskilled labor for which qualified workers are not available in the United States."
From that the only possibilities are under EB-3 though I'm not sure your high school diploma/apprenticeship would equate to a baccalaureate degree. Otherwise the last - aliens capable of performing unskilled labor for which qualified workers aren't available - may be possible though what sort of jobs would be available under that heading I've no idea. Even fruit/crop picking needs skill to do it quickly and efficiently. So you may not qualify under any of the options.
Frankly that last category makes no sense to me whatsoever. How can you be qualified to be an unskilled worker? |

If I pass that, Well then I've got a Baccalaureate. If that's really the best way, I might go for it.
After I take that and got my degree, what comes afterwards?
What exactly is that program that aSwissInTheUS mentioned?

So can someone clarify what I need to do after I've received my Baccalaureate? Apply for that program, and what comes after that?
I'm kinda lost here

No one can say for sure. It depends on what you do, how you do it. And all might change with this new president.
Why not concentrate on doing what you like, excel in it, get to be an expert and then see further?

a PhD program takes what, 7 years? I'm all in for that but after hours of research I can't find a definite answer. Do I still need to be one of those:
"Aliens capable of performing skilled labor (requiring at least 2 years of training or experience) for which qualified workers are not available in the United States;
Aliens capable of performing unskilled labor for which qualified workers are not available in the United States."?
I'm sorry, my head's burning. I might look at this thread tomorrow and be ashamed to death lol
