How does SEM take to give a decision on B Permit

Hi all,
I apologise if this question has already been answered before.
I might be moving to a new job so I will be going from a CDL to a B Permit (or L soon).

My potential employers have got the permission of the cantonal authorities and from what I hear, my file has been sent to SEM. My future employers seem confident that the permit will be ready in the next few days. However, from what I understood from this Forum and otherwise, the decision from SEM could take 8-12 weeks. I need some estimate of the time as I need to tell my current employers that I may be leaving. Could my permit be ready by the end of the month or could it take upto 12 weeks (i.e till June)? With Easter coming up, I am not sure how it could be any sooner.

any experiences to be shared on this?
P.S: I am non-EU

Ask your employer who they're in contact with and and ask that person directly. If you give the reason like you just did here there's no reason to take your asking as inappropriate.

Thats the thing. The only response I get it is that they expect it to take just a few days more. That is quite difference from what people have said online. Most of those posts are from 2011-2014 so I was wondering whether someone on this Forum could provide me with more experiences related to this especially after the new laws have come into force.

No one can say. It depends on the Kanton your employer applied for the permit, it depends on the workload per Kanton, it depends on how they view the application, so almost impossible to say

What new laws? The Foreign Nationals Act has been in force since 2008 with only a few amendments/deletions.

The procedure is outlined here:

https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...ensablauf.html

but no timescale is given as each case is different. Documents may be missing, the SEM may decide they want more information/action from the employer, etc.

All you can do is ask your prospective new employer to let you know as soon as they hear from SEM.

I think no one can really answer your question, because each case is different and there seems to be a big variance of delay of SEM's decision
From my very little experience (I do not do recruiting but talked several times with our HR who does a lot of international recuiting), SEM's decision on permits are either very fast or very slow. In many cases, after a simple formal check the dossier is clear to pass or fail, and the decision is made within days; in some other cases, they will have to do a more detailed investigation (including background check) and the decision is then very long (1 to 3 months)

You will not get any more specific response than the one you already have, neither from your prospective employer, not from any authority, and certainly not here.

You can ask 100 people and they will tell you it took anything between 4 (in very very few cases) and 16 weeks for their non-EU permit to be approved. This doesn't help you at all, so there's no point in asking any further. You have no choice but to wait it out and any further inquiry with any authority before the minimum of 8 (rather 10) weeks is up will lead to exactly nothing. As there is NEVER a guarantee for any non-EU application to be approved - no matter how "confident" or "optimistic" your employer may pretend to be - I would never ever recommend to quit the current job without having a permit approval in hand.
