EU permit registration: how long is the wait before I can start work?

Hi everyone,

Just a small question: when you register for a permit at the city office, how long do you have to wait until you can actually work?

With a work contract in hand and an address valid for the initial registration to request a first L/B permit, how long does an EU citizen have to wait until they can commence work? Specifically interested in Zürich and Bern cantons.

This doubt came up when I was told by a potential employer that even with the work contract that starts on May 1st, I could not begin employment until my permit was authorized, which could take weeks/months, so my "immediate availability" wasn't all that immediate.

I was under the impression that due to my EU-ness, as long as I had all my paperwork in order, I would be issued with temporary papers and those would be valid immediately so I could set up a bank account and start work and all that. I thought I would get such temporary papers on the same day, or at least by post within a short period (to me that means up to 2 weeks)

The only thing I found through an online search was "Once an EU citizen finds a job, their job contract will be in a pending state until a work permit has been issued."

Anyone have any insights?

So long as you've registered/applied for your permit you're good to go.

"Gainful employment of more than 3 months:

Within 14 days of their arrival and before actually taking up work, nationals of EU-27/EFTA states have to register with the local authorities of the commune in which they are residing and apply for a residence permit. A valid ID or passport and a written confirmation of employment (e.g. the contract of employment containing details of the duration of employment and the number of working hours) have to be presented. A residence permit will be issued depending on the duration of employment: a short-term residence permit (type L permit) for employment of up to 364 days or a residence permit (type B permit) for employment of at least one year or for an unlimited period."

https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...aq.html#Taking up residence and gainful employment

Obviously once you have your permit in your hands you'll need to show it to your employer as they'll need the details for their records.

And yes, as far as I'm aware you can get a document from the gemeinde/cantonal migration office that says your permit is being processed.

I do not remember exactly but it takes some days.

I came on the 24th of June, registered at kreisbüro and be able to work on 1st July.

You get kind of receipt valid for your company. The final document (permitt-booklet) lasts some weeks.

I speak from memory
