Visa with work permit

Hi all,

I am a student from India. I have an internship at EPFL this summer. I will be getting paid a stipend for my internship. I thus need a work permit for this. I have applied for visa 2 weeks back. I am now waiting to receive authorization for work permit. (My internship is less than 90 days) I am supposed to leave for Switzerland on 6th May. Does anyone have any idea how much time will it take for me to be done with my visa process? I really am tensed about the visa. (I know I was late in applying but the current university I am studying in I have to obtain an NOC to apply for visa and that took a lot of time)

The website and the letter I got says it takes 8-12 weeks for the visa to be processed? Does it really take this long? I hope that the process is shorter than this.

Yes, it does and yes, you applied way too late. Could maybe see if EPFL can find out what stage the visa applicatiion is at, but I suggest you also prepare yourself for the possibility the internship may not happen.

But I read on swissinfo forum that sometimes work permit may be granted as fast as in 3 weeks. In that case, I can start my internship 1-2 weeks late. Will this not work out for me?

Some times this will be in 3 weeks but more often it will really take several weeks more and unfortunately you cannot start without the proper permit.

I would say 3 weeks would be remarkably quick. Some may have gotten their permits that quickly, but it's not the norm. Also it depends if all your paperwork is in order, they may find they need something else from you which would delay matters. Plus we've just had Easter so at least 1 working day was lost because of that, maybe 2 if the people dealing with permits had Easter Monday off.
