In my experience, it is impossible. I was in the same situation, was on my own permit B but then switched to my wife's permit under family regroupement.

After discussing with the relevant authorities for a year, it was made clear there is absolutely no way they will give an independent permit to someone who is eligible to get one through family regroupement.

This makes complete sense in their eyes since why would they use two of their permit quota when then have the option to use one.

The B permit has to be renewed every year. Next renewal is in Jan 2022. I came to Zurich in Aug 2020 and started work in Nov 2020.

It could be a possibility that my partner's B permit will not be renewed by their employer when it comes up for renewal in Dec/Jan later this year. Hence was thinking of this route of asking my current employer to apply for a B permit primary for myself.
As I am typing this reply, I realized how much of a long shot this is

Application and approval of work related B permit (at least for a non EU profile) is solely dependent on the employer and their willingness to retain the employee.

(The above may not be valid for EU citizens)

Your employer will have to fill in a form and submit to the respective department (AWA) explaining
- if they really did not find anybody in your profile from the Swiss job market and the EU job market

The ping pong between the employer's HR and AWA can last for 2 to 3 iterations (if not more).
If the employer is motivated enough they would not mind this.

Since your permit is expiring in Jan - I would recommend to ask the employer to start the process already in Aug / Sep so that you get a clear answer by Nov end.

If your employer is not motivated enough, you can look for an employer who might be motivated enough to do the processing for you.

In this case from my understanding your employer can apply for your permit, but you have no special rights because you have been living here or working at the company. They will have to meet the same requirements as if they were recruiting you from a third nation country.

Go for it Anirudh : Its technically possible. Since your permit is not tied to a company - you can also switch employer who might be interested to retain you. Then the employer will have to apply for an extension with necessary forms, documentations, justifications.
Since you are already here and have an economic role - its less complicated than applying for a new work permit all together.

The only parameter that will run against you = time.
