Studies is not a valid reason to put it on hold.

Re: permit b and leaving for 2 years

they did it for us, but we could clearly prove we would return within four years (expatriation contract from employer). We actually did get our permit B returned when we arrived back earlier this year, although it's not a big deal being a EU citizen.

You were sent abroad by your employer, that is an acceptable reason, education or looking after dying parents are not.

Re: permit b and leaving for 2 years

Under the Foreign Nationals Act putting a permit on hold is only supposed to be possible for C permit holders. However, there is provision under section 3.3.5 for children with B permits to do so for things like further education.

"As far as foreigners traveling abroad (businessmen, artists, sportsmen, editors, etc.) are concerned, this requirement may be waived, in so far as the center of their interests in Switzerland (family, social and private relations). This is the case when they have more important ties in Switzerland than abroad, especially when the family actually resides in our country (see also section 3.1.8.1.1 concerning weekly residents). The same is true for children and young people who undergo training or continuing education abroad, provided that they have previously had a residence permit in Switzerland and return regularly to Switzerland. (eg, visiting parents during school holidays or semester holidays). Regarding the other conditions and the jurisprudence of the Federal Tribunals, see ch. 6.16."
