Short: you should be fine. Long: Bulgaria is not part of Schengen, however, as part of the process of becoming part of it, it accepts Schengen visa holders for up to 90 days. http://www.mfa.bg/bg/pages/124/index.html

Re: Can i go to bulgaria with L permit?

thank you for your reply. Yes I saw this explanation in english or german but they say "visa" instead of the permit. Thats why I doubt that.

Is there visa control in entrance of Bulgaria coming from Switzerland? If there is not then it can be fine. But if there is, then they may make problem..

There is a pass control for EU and non-EU. Depending on your passport, you may need a visa so they will check if you have it.

I think it's better to call Bulgarian consulate in Bern and ask them directly whether you still need a visa if you hold an L residence permit. Just to avoid any unpleasant surprise - what can happen is you won't be allowed to set foot outside of the airport. In principle you should be OK.

Re: Can i go to bulgaria with L permit?

Update: I called the bulgarian embassy and asked a staff. He said if I go with my swiss permit and my password, you do not need a visa. But in the airport, i will be controlled by police. (its not like a schengen country)

I hope, it will be useful for someone also..

Yeah, you will go through passport control.. I live in Bulgaria and if you need any advice or something just let me know. You will arrive at the old terminal, grab only licensed taxi (if you don't rent).

So, you'll be fine! I thought so. Enjoy it. Food is good, people are hospitable, prices are very OK.

Haha, yeah, that's true, however, Bulgarian/Serbian/Macedonian languages are very easy to learn as reading is "as-you-write".

Rather take the metro from the airport. Its quick, cheap, clean and gets you downtown in about 15 min.

There is no metro from the old terminal, so it would be complicated to catch a taxi to new terminal and then metro...

Taxi is very cheap in Bulgaria, from Airport to city center it will be something between 5-8 BGN (which is 2.5 - 4 EUR). If you have baggage, taxi is the most convenient way to travel and when it is cheap as it is in Sofia, I wouldn't bother with bus at all.

As for languages... I doubt that you will find Bulgarians who speak turkish, but almost everyone is speaking English (well... the grandma in late 70's...NO!). Also, there are turkish citizens who live in Bulgaria, most of them are in Southern Bulgaria (Plovdiv, Kardjali etc.) but you may find someone in Sofia too.

Are you staying in Sofia?

Thank you for your detailed answer. I have more changce to find someone who speak turkish then german at least there should be some turkish restaurants

Yes we will only go to Sofia for 4 days (actually its a 3 full days). We booked a hotel and also bought flight ticket with wizzair, it was cheap and we have only handbags. If taxi is cheap then we can use taxi. But I read something that they have to start this taximeter otherwise some problems may occur.. And I have to find also licenced taxi but i dont know what is the difference as apperance

Re: Can i go to bulgaria with L permit?

All taxis are yellow and by the law, the price must be displayed on the glass of every passenger door -- the price which you should expect is:
0.80 BGN (Start)
0.80 - 1.00 BGN (per KM) (it is more expensive during the night)

Keep in mind that every taxi company can set their own price and this is the price for all well-known and legit taxies. There could be a taxi with a price of 5 BGN per km (for example) but he must publish the price too. If there is no published price, avoid the car.

Here's an image where I marked with "arrow" how the price should be displayed:

https://screencast.com/t/T3ys1VX7Li

When you get in the taxi, ask him to start the taximeter or the better option would be to confirm that taximeter will be started before you get in.

Also, the most trusted/popular/largest taxi company in Sofia is OK Taxi, so if you see their car, get in!

This is their website in English:
https://www.oktaxi.net/onlineorder_en.php

You can pre-order and I see that they published the prices from the left side.

Re: Can i go to bulgaria with L permit?

I kept seeing this thread title and wondered why so many answers to someone who wants to know if they can drive to Bulgaria with a learner license...L permit.

Now I realised my Franglais has created a completely different story in my head.

Re: Can i go to bulgaria with L permit?

@Rachel Moore, hehe you are right it could be also like that i would write "Residence Permit".. But the topic is under Permits/Visas/Government section

@Odile, why you said that? At least, they will not accept me in their country and send me back instead of prison I called the bulgarian embassy and he said no problem. So they can also call and learn what this embassy say. Its not my made up story
