Expired Passport

Good morning everyone,

I am new here and not sure how to navigate around well so i am sorry if this has been asked and answered before.

I have a UK and Swiss passport. My UK passport is current and my Swiss passport expired in 1995 when i was 15 or 16. I am now 38.

With the uncertainty in the UK with the EU I would now like to renew my passport. Am i still able to renew it? As it expired in 1995 when i was either 15 or 16 years old.

Thank you for any help and advice.

Re: Expired Passport

Yes of course you can renew your Swiss passport. The non renewal of a passport does not cause the loss of Swiss citizenship.
You’ll need to go to the embassy in London once you’ve made an appointment on this website. https://www.schweizerpass.admin.ch/pass/fr/home.html

Good that you had a Swiss passport, otherwise you may have lost your Swiss citizenship at age 22 based on Art. 10 Swiss Citizenship Act (old law) https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...index.html#a10

As a Swiss living aboard you should be aware of some obligations and rights you have according the Swiss Aboard Act https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...127/index.html and the Swiss Abroad Ordinance https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...081/index.html

In general if you live aboard (as a Swiss) you should:
Register at the the Swiss mission (embassy or consulate) covering your country of stay.

This is the first step to get a new Swiss passport.

As you may know that military service is compulsory for Swiss males. Luckily, unlike citizens of Turkey or South Korea, Swiss living aboard are relieved, at least since 1995. See Swiss Armed forces Act Art. 4 Abs. 1 https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi.../index.html#a4 (German version) also no compensation tax in case you lived more than 3 years aboard at the time you became 20 years old.

If you liked to do voluntarily (male or female) some funny military training, shooting, riding in a tank, and playing lot of Jass, than unfortunately you missed this unique opportunity as you are too old to be recruited.

Additional useful information:
Information by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs https://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home...itzerland.html
Online services for Swiss aboard: https://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home...r-ausland.html
The Swiss Aboard Organisation: http://aso.ch/en/information

Note: admin.ch is the official website of the Swiss government. If not indicated otherwise I linked to the English version.
