You cover two parts:
gun owenership and gun carry.

Ownership (acquisition):
1. For a "normal" gun (less than 20 bullet pistol, less than 10bullet rifle >60cm, semi auto) you don't really need a reason to own it.
2. You do need a WES (acquisition permit), this is farily trivial to get
The author mentioned that they have a B permit without their home country permission: in this case getting a WES is, AFAIK, not trivial.
Before producing my foreign gun license, I was told by police folks in Zurich that I will likely not get it.

You don't technically need an ownership permit from your home country - a letter from the police stating that they have no issues with you owning a gun in Switzerland is enough.

Depending on what your home country is, this can be anywhere from trivial to exremely complex.

I'm in the complex group, and gave up. Going in circles, contacting people in the authorities outside the circle who just point you back to the circle. Reached out to some personal contacts and after some promising starts ended up back in the contact embassy, contact Garda loop.

Garda would suggest Ireland. You could try a non-resident firearms permit.

Technically, its for people outside of Ireland who want to go there with a firearm... but if you were to complete it with say, your air rifle details....

Yep, Ireland.
I was looking at that, to apply for the form you need to possess a firearm, to initially possess a firearm you need permission from the Irish police for here.

There's a hole in the bucket, dear Spinal, dear Spinal.

Then mend it dear Ato, dear Ato

If you were to apply as a non-resident in Ireland, you could apply for it (potentially) without a permit. As you would have the air rifle in a country that doesn't consider air rifles firearms.

I'll give it another go and see. It's that or wait a year and half longer and apply for a c permit.

Quick update on this - got a call from the police, asking some questions around my UK passport... The guy was friendly as usual (keeping in mind that my German is appalling), and the day after I got my permit for 3 "firearms" with no specification or limitation.
Hi guys,
Thanks for sharing your experience there. Also in the same case, I had a license in 2009 in France.

I live also in Zurich and would really love to get back to sport shooting.

@Spinal : Which Police did you went to ? (Kantonspolizei, Stadtpolizei ?)
Also, my german is very low, do you know if they speak English or French ?

Thanks

You may need to renew your French permit, not sure how French permits work at all, so can't help there.

Re police - there's an address on the form, it goes to them.

The guy who called me spoke "nur Deutsch und Schweizerdeutsch"... I got by with some very limited German
