UK citizen, Family reunification - family members non-EU

Hello,
am planning to take up a job in Switzerland.
I am a UK citizen, my husband and two children are non-EU citizens.
I understand that I need:
1. job contract
2. flat rental agreement
3. residence/work permit
for myself, which I then take to the Swiss Embassy to apply for the Family Reunification visa for the 3 of them.
Is that right?
I have seen that for them there is a 'solvency' requirement. What is this? How much money do they have to have?
My employer wants us all to move over together. Does anyone here have experience of this? The employers say it is very straightforward, but I am not sure.
Please advise!
Thank you!

It is pretty straightforward and you've almost got the sequence right. But the family reunification visas come first. So:

1. Contact the Swiss embassy/consulate where you're all based and get the Type D visa application form to fill in - it has a space on it where you say it's for family reunification. Fill it in and send all the supporting documents needed with the application.

2. Once visas are granted they'll be stamped in your family's passports and they'll have a set timeframe to move to Switzerland.

3. When you get here you all go to the commune/gemeinde (village/town/city hall) and apply for your permits there - taking along your employment contact and rental agreement. The permits will be issued in a few weeks' time.

Job done.

The only "solvency" that comes into it is that you must earn or have sufficient funds to support your dependents. With the employment contract that should be sufficient proof.

Hi Medea

A question regarding the process... I thought that the application for Type D visa and the application of residence permit need to be submitted simultaneously? And the Type D visa will only be granted when the permit is granted ?

have I misunderstood something ??

Re: UK citizen, Family reunification - family members non-EU

Since you're an EU national they can apply for the permits once they're here. And the fact the visas are for family reunification pretty much guarantees the permit applications will be fine. They wouldn't get the visas if they weren't.

You can apply for the permits at the same time as the visas if you wish, it can be done either way since you're an EU national.

Re: UK citizen, Family reunification - family members non-EU

Hi Mead

Sorry I didn't make it clear, I am non-EU national but my husband is EU-national (he is in CH working already). Would that make any difference?

Also an additional question: I've been reading from the forum and if I understand it correctly - a dependent of a non-EU L permit holder will not automatically get the right to work, it will have to go through the non-EU hiring process. Will it be the same for a dependent of a EU-national on L permit?

If he's already here then he can do the permit application at his end, you do the visas at yours. The two will be matched up during the process.

No, EU national L dependent permit holders aren't subject to the criteria for hiring non-EU national L dependents.

Re: UK citizen, Family reunification - family members non-EU

Not a problem. I get much worse with my real surname sometimes. Confuses the Swiss no end - even when I put it on their forms correctly they still insist on changing it around to what they think it should be. Unusual surname I know, but if I say it's my surname why can't they believe me?
