Change of cantons on permit B

Hey everyone,

I have a question regarding the change of cantons. Someone probably asked this before but I can't seem to find the answer.

I was studying my master degree in Geneva and have a student B permit. Now I have a PhD offer from USI in Lugano. So my question is: could I extend my permit in Geneva and just move to Lugano or do I need to apply for a new permit over there?

Thanks a lot for the help, guys. I would greatly appreciate it

Re: Change of cantons on permit B

In my case (EU citizen, working full-time) I had to apply for a new one with my move to a new canton (while keeping the same job)

They said it'll take one month to recieve it but it's been two months now..
As with everything else in Switzerland, things move slow, with major delays and nobody held accountable.

Funny, not my experience.

AFAIK you need in principle the OK to move if you are non EU.

As a EU person I have moved several times without any issues.

Re: Change of cantons on permit B

You have to apply for a new permit since they're canton specific. Even though a B permit allows you to live/work anywhere in Switzerland (EU/open non-EU permits) you're still technically asking permission to move.

"Art. 36 Place of residence

Persons with a short stay permit, a residence or a permanent residence permit are free to choose their place of residence within the canton that granted the permit.

Art. 37 Change of the place of residence to another canton

1 Persons with a short stay permit or a residence permit who would like to relocate their place of residence to another canton must apply for the appropriate permit from the new canton beforehand.

2 Persons with a residence permit are entitled to move to another canton provided they are not unemployed and there are no grounds for revocation in terms of Article 62 paragraph 1.

3 Persons with a permanent residence permit are entitled to move to another canton, provided there are no grounds for revocation in terms of Article 63."

Re: Change of cantons on permit B

Thanks a lot everyone for the help.
I got through to OCPM in Geneva and it's like Medea said; I keep my residence in Geneva then I just extend my permit here. If I move my place of residence to Lugano, then I should get a new permit over there. It seems quite straightforward. But then again, as Atheri said, everything is super slow when it comes to this (also speaking from a personal experience when renewing my permit last year).
Thanks again, everyone!

Re: Change of cantons on permit B

I had to ask Geneva for permission to move to Vaud (away from GE), and then ask Vaud for permission to move there. Vaud gave me the OK, provided I only worked in Geneva.

Got a Permis C etc later so above now moot.

Re: Change of cantons on permit B

Yes, I guess if I decide to move to Lugano I need to inform OCPM in Geneva first. Thanks a lot for the reply.

Re: Change of cantons on permit B

Excuse me, I have the same question.
When I check internet, I see information that I'm free to change canton for a new residence and/or for a new job.
I understand that I must change the paper document, but it's the same permit, just with new address?
It doesn't reset my staying time in Switzerland and I don't ask a new permit? It's important because in future I hope to change my actual B to C, so I don't want to start to count my Swiss ages from 0 again.

here (https://www.ch.ch/en/renewal-overvie...idence-permit/ ) I see definition of permits, so I mean
Quote:
Permit B EU/EFTA (residence permit)
here (https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...ml#-1597848945 ) I see the following text:

Quote:
Geographic mobility
Short-term residence permits, residence permits, settlement permit are valid for the whole of Switzerland (geographic mobility). This means that EU/EFTA nationals and their family members do not require a new permit if they move to another canton. However, they must register with the authorities of the new canton and have their new postal address entered in the permit. To this end, the foreign national shall present his/her permit when submitting the declaration of arrival form at the new place of residence. The same rules shall apply in the case of change of residence within the same canton or commune.

Quote:
Professional mobility
An EU/EFTA residence permit entitles the holder to change jobs or take up self-employment (professional mobility). Holders of these types of permits are subject to the same regulations on health and employment as Swiss nationals (i.e. trade laws, permits to carry out an occupation, etc.). However, holders of such permits are not allowed to take up positions that involve sovereign functions (e.g. in the army, police or judiciary).

It should state on your permit whether it's valid for the whole of Switzerland or not. Every time I've moved between cantons, I've just gotten a new piece of paper with my new address on it (and had to pay around 100 francs for it), but otherwise it's been the same permit, valid for the same time.

(But mine isn't bound to a specific canton, so I don't know how it works in that case.)
