Permit B or L for 3 months of temporary job?

Hi,

I am a non-EU national who has been working and living in Switzerland for 4 years and 9 months on Permit B without interruption.

The problem is, my contract ends at the end of this January and due to unexpected bureaucratic delay, I will have a new contract in a new company 3 months later, from this May. I can legally stay for 3 months as visitor's VISA but of course I cannot work in this case.

Fortunately, I was offered a temporary 3-month job (internship position) from another company although with very low salary (2000 CHF/month), which is still better than nothing. The HR asked me if I want to apply for B or L. I think L is better as it is quicker and not subject to quota.

My question is, if I get this short-term job as permit L instead of B, will I have any disadvantage later when I'm eligible to apply for permit C (permanent residence)? According to some articles in this forum, many people had permit L during their stay, but I guess it's case by case.

So if you were in my situation, what would you do?

All non-EU national permits are subject to quotas.

L permits no longer count towards C permit applications, but I really don't know what they'd do about such a short period on one.

Thanks for the info! I'm fine even if the L-permit period does not count towards the C permit, as long as it doesn't harm.

A B permit would obviously be better for you, the different permits are conceived with the idea that B is a potential stepping stone to C whereas L is just a one off thing. Unfortunately if you only have a 3 month contract I believe you have no chance of scoring a B (you need a contract for at least one year). Also if the position is really an internship it is even harder as internship usually have even harder conditions. But what about your contract after that? You seem to be certain that you have it, so is your situation for that already cleared? If you know for sure that you'll have a new B permit valid from May maybe you can talk to the Office de la migration and explain the situation and they might give you a "bridge".

It does harm in the sense that you need to have always been in uninterrupted possession of a B permit for last five years before you can apply for a C permit (both ways, early and normal).

So you cannot spend 4y10m on a B permit, 3m on an L permit than get a new B and after 2 months apply for an early C. The earliest possibility to apply will then only be after 5y of having the second B permit, that is after 10 years and one month in total.

You can potentially be on a Permit L for a decade...
