Permit B and return visa in Ticino

Hi everyone,

Does anybody how long does it take to get student permit B (for non-EU) in Lugano (Ticino)?

Second question is: I need to travel in early March but in case I still don't have my permit, does the immigration office in Ticino issue a return visa? I know that was possible in Geneva, but I don't know how it is like in Ticino.

I'd greatly appreciate any help/experience with such matters, specifially in Ticino.

Thanks a million!
Aliaa

Re: Permit B and return visa in Ticino

It can take up to 2 or even 3 month for a permit (but it often goes faster). To apply for a visa you need to go to the embassy in your own country, it does not depend on the canton. Cantons issue the residence permits. To get a student permit you need to be enrolled in a school. (also if you already have a had a student permit before it might be harder to get a new one for a different school).
If you want more information you can check out this video (it explains student permits towards the end)

Re: Permit B and return visa in Ticino

Hi Ludmilla,

Thanks for your reply.
However, I'm already in Switzerland. I had a permit B in Geneva while I was doing my masters and now I have a PhD from the university in Lugano. The HR there already applied for my new permit from Ticino and it's kind of a "request of modification of permit". As my new permit is in process, I, of course, stay in Switzerland. But since I will need to travel in March, I wanted to know if I can get a return visa if my permit is still not there. Also, does the 2 to 3 months still apply in such case?

Thanks a million,
Aliaa

Re: Permit B and return visa in Ticino

Hi Aliaa,
sorry I did not understand your question the first time, usually renewals are faster. Also it is of course totally fine to go from a master to a PhD. It is harder to get a student permit renewed if you have studied a subject for four years and then drop out and change subject, but your case seems straightforward and the universities usually always manage to get permits for their PhD students without too many complications.

Talk to the cantonal migration office. I don't know about Ticino, but most other cantons will issue you a travel document that says the permit is being processed (for a fee).

Re: Permit B and return visa in Ticino

Hi again Ludmilla,

No worries, I wasn't really clear enough. But that's pretty good to hear. I got a bit scared at first haha.

3wishes, thanks for your answer. I had the same situation once in Geneva while I was renewing my permit and I had to travel. At that time, I went to OCPM and they gave me a return visa on the same day (I had to pay, of course :P). I assume it's a standard thing but just wanted to make sure it's the same in Ticino. I guess I'll ask them directly then.

Thanks a million, everyone

Clearly they don't need a visa but EU citizens don't get anything, so are only left with their national document whilst their permit is being processed, not sure about non-EU though.

Yeah, for EU there shouldn't be a problem. Different story for non-EU.
