Do you think I can live in France while studying in Lausanne?

Hello.

I will start to study in EPFL since this autumn.

I currently live in Tokyo,(I am Korean tho) and I have french girlfriend which we are planning to be PACSed.

Since living in France is both cheaper and easier for my girlfriend's paperwork, we are thinking of living near Geneva.

This is rough plan :

0. Get a permission from EPFL(already done)
1. Proceed PACS in Tokyo.
2. Get French visa from PACS.
3. Find accomodation near Geneva.
4. Move there.
5. Since Switzerland is one of the countries in schengen, I should able to drive to EPFL on daily basis.

Do you think this plan is doable?

Thank you.

Re: Do you think I can live in France while studying in Lausanne?

As you mention "cheapest" you evidently haven't factored in the cost of driving from Geneva to Lausanne.

Accommodation "near Geneva" in France is not necessarily so much cheaper once you have factored in all the costs.

Don't forget to add on minimum 2 hours traveling time each day, average hourly salary for Switzerland is around Chf25.--/hour, so x 2 x 5 days = Chf 250.-- per week as a rough calculation for your time

I'd say it makes no sense at all, honestly.

Short answer - no. Since you have to have a student permit from Switzerland so you can study here that requires you to live in Switzerland.

Driving to EPFL is not as easy as you think especially from France, you might think its a good deal but youll suffer from lost time after a short while.

I dont know if PACs are recognized the same as marriage, if not you will NOT have the right to to work in switzerland AND live in france.

You cannot just say you live in France and work in Switzerland, Schengen does not extend to working rights especially for third-country citizens like yourself.

To be honest, this is a terrible plan on so many levels and it's actually probably not even possible. A French permit will not necessarily give you the right to study in Switzerland. I know you won't be able to work in Switzerland. So it's possible you won't be able to study either.

Re: Do you think I can live in France while studying in Lausanne?

Just because you've been accepted by EPFL, doesn't mean you can study here. You have to have a student permit which is granted by the Swiss government providing you meet the conditions to have one. Being accepted by a Swiss uni is only the start of the process. You must apply for a student permit via the Swiss embassy/consulate in Tokyo and only if that is approved will you be able to study here.

Re: Do you think I can live in France while studying in Lausanne?

Live in Evian take Boat + bus to EPFL would be the easiest way to do that but with all the fussing with transport it seems it would be easier to rent a room near EPFL and visit GF on the weekends in France.

Re: Do you think I can live in France while studying in Lausanne?

Thank you all- it helped me a lot!

Ok, so student visa in switzerland ‘requires’ me to live in switzerland, not just ‘allows’.

So maybe we have to find other way around- such as she visits me in switzerland.
