New Quotas for UK citizens - Brexit

Swiss Federal government released this statement today on UK citizen quotas for 2019:

"In the event of the UK's disorderly withdrawal from the European Union, the Agreement on Free Movement of Persons (AFMP) will no longer apply between Switzerland and the UK from 30 March. UK citizens entering Switzerland for the first time will basically be accorded the same rights as other third country citizens. For admission to take up employment, the requirements set out in the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act (FNIA) apply. However, if the UK leaves the EU on the basis of a withdrawal agreement, the current provisions of the AFMP will continue to apply in relations between Switzerland and the UK during a transitional period

(expected to last until the end of 2020).

As part of its ‘Mind the Gap' strategy, the Federal Council decided at its meeting on 13 February to introduce a separate quota as a temporary measure, allowing 3,500 British citizens to work in Switzerland."

"Quota of 3,500 places
The maximum numbers for British citizens should apply from 30 March until 31 December."

"This year, it should be possible to recruit a total of 3,500 workers from the UK: 2,100 residence permits (B) and 1,400 short-stay permits (L). This will guarantee the flexibility that the Swiss economy needs."

Re: New Quotas for UK citizens - Brexit

Interesting... but as with all 'metrics', only makes sense in context.. what's the average number of Brits awarded a permit per year over, say, the past 5 years ?

So with 3500 permits, it looks like the swiss value just over 70% of immigrant Brits. Which is nice.

Isn’t the 3500 permits just from April to December of this year in the case of a no deal Brexit?

If you extrapolate those numbers to cover a year that would be 4666 permits.
This would seem to be in line with the number of Brits moving here in recent years.

Re: New Quotas for UK citizens - Brexit

I think B permits should be re-lettered to something else, like an S permit or something, for 5 years.

A "B" permit should now stand for a "Brexit" permit which is valid for two years, however you don't get to know whether it will be renewed until 5 minutes before it expires.

Permit S already exists, although interestingly not a single one has ever been issued.
You will have to select another letter.

Please don't let in British Imperialists like Loz with all his pin up posters of his Heroes & Villains of
the British Empire !!

As Switzerland has it's good name to protect without being besmirched by Expats like Loz peddling Pin up
posters of the British Empire like Cecil Rhodes, Robert Baden-Powell, Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham,
Lord Kitchener, Gordon of Khartoum, Scott of the Antarctic, Clive of India & Del Boy of Peckham !!

The 3.5k permits cover 9 months only. Plus presumably everybody who can will arrive before Brexit, so the quota may effectively need to cover the 2nd half of 2019 only.

It will depend on the permit they get for starters, if they don't get a permanent position, then they will get an L Permit, which may or may not be renewed when it expires...

If they get a B permit they should be OK for now and they'll probably make it to getting a C permit before any major changes happen, but no one can say for certain.

Up until Brexit the current rules apply, there's no change. If you have a permit before then you're in, but after Brexit new rules may apply for both newcomers and renewals.
