Pausing C Permit

Hi EF. I am considering leaving Switzerland for a few years to pursue a job opportunity elsewhere. I have a C Permit and would like to pause it.
Is that possible? If so, has anyone gone through the process and can provide information on that?

Re: Pausing C Permit

It is possible, you can put it on hold for up to 4 years. Talk to your commune/gemeinde since they're the ones who'll say yes or no to your proposal.

Re: Pausing C Permit

You can only freeze it for max 4 years if you go on extended business trip organized by your current Swiss employer.

If you just find some other job elsewhere - C permit will not be frozen.

Re: Pausing C Permit

That isn't the only reason for putting a permit on hold, there are a lot of different ones. As said, the OP should talk to their gemeinde/commune since they're the ones who'll say yes or no to the idea.

Re: Pausing C Permit

As far as I'm aware there can be just 3 reasons:

- Study abroad
- Going on an extended business trip organized by Swiss employer
- Attending military service in the country of citizenship

that's not really a lot.

I think there is flexibility. we have at least one colleague here who has left permanently to live in spain but the commune still gave him the option of handing it in for 4 years, for a whopping 60 CHF in case they decided to come back.

Those are the examples given in the law, but as I 've been told several times here, they're not the only reasons for putting a C on hold.

I agree. I know several people who have opted to do that even though in theory they have left permanently.

I think they are a lot more flexible now than they used to be.

Clocker has become a little unpopular
Re: Pausing C Permit

There are already other threads on this topic.

This may be canton dependent but you can also make the request up to 6 months after leaving Switzerland.

In some cantons it is the Migration office who decide, not the town hall.

Re: Pausing C Permit

Thank you everyone for your very helpful replies.

I am based in canton Zurich and have contacted my commune who mentioned I needed to file a request with the migration office using the form entitled
Gesuch um Aufrechterhaltung der Niederlassungsbewilligung
https://ma.zh.ch/internet/sicherheitsdirektion/migrationsamt/de/formulare.html

I suppose that in Zurich that office is responsible for extending or not the permit.

In addition to the valid extension reasons mentioned earlier, it also lists
- Medical reasons
- Other reasons

I would be taking an opportunity outside Switzerland with a company which has offices in the country. My intention is to eventually come back to Switzerland either with that firm or another in the same business.

Does anyone have insights on that scenario being approved or not for extension?
