Can you travel internationally before receiving a work permit?

After arriving in Switzerland on a long-term visa, it's my understanding that we have to apply for our work permit within 8 days, which then takes a couple weeks to be mailed to us. Do you know if it's possible/legal to travel outside Switzerland and the EU before we receive this permit? Or would we be unable to re-enter Switzerland without this permit in hand?

Thanks!

If you're non-EU and don't need a visa to enter the Schengen area you can just come and go as you like.
If you need a visa then you'll receive a D visa that enables you to enter the country, and that will usually be a 3-month multiple entry visa, so you can use it for traveling before the permit is ready.
If issuing the permit card takes longer that 3 months for some reason, you can ask the migration office of your canton for a reentry visa (another multiple entry D visa).
In Zurich you can just walk into Migrationsamt without an appointment and they issue it on the spot for 90 francs.

Thanks for the quick reply! So since coming/going to USA doesn't require us to enter the Schengen area then it sounds like we should be all set? But it's good to know that otherwise we are able to visit the Migrationsamt in Zurich to get a reentry visa.

Switzerland is in the Schengen area so you will be crossing the Schengen border flying from/to Zurich into the USA.
With US passports you can enter Schengen without a visa, but you will need to get a D visa before your first arrival at some Swiss consulate in the US so that you're stamped through as an incoming new resident at the border and not as a tourist (which would mean you must leave after 90 days).

Once that happens and your passport details get linked to the ZEMIS database (linking the passport to the residence status) into the system I think you can come and go freely even if the D visa expires before you get your permit card. To be completely sure I'd carry along the paper saying that the permit is being issued/renewed at the moment.
