Moving on 1st of May- all Customs closed?

Me and my husband will be moving to Switzerland next month. Our moving company is coming with most of our belongings in the first week of May but we have to come a bit earlier to arrange a few things, so we plan to do a partial move (cars and a few boxes) on the 1st of May. Basically it is the only day that we have available due to our busy work schedules.
We just found out all the clearing customs will be closed due to national holiday, so the question is - is there any way to still get a stamp or basically we are not allowed to move on this date? Is there any solution allowing as to come on 1st of May?

I will appreciate any advice on that.
Thank you!

1st of May is not national, only some cantons.

That's a wonderful news Thank you! It looks like the Customs near French border should be open on that day.

Re: Moving on 1st of May- all Customs closed?

When I came I stopped at French customs at Basel (to get export stamps for the car before it can be declared to the Swiss) and they had no interest whatsoever and directed me to commercial export agents. In the end someone suggested I go to the German customs on the A5 and everything went smoothly. It seems to go that way for many things. So good luck! Otherwise just drive over and do the paperwork later.

1 May, is a public holiday in France and Germany as well as in Aargau, Basel-Land, Basel-Stadt, Fribourg, Jura, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Thurgau, Ticino, Zurich in Switzerland.

France has a number of public holidays in May, check in advance.

It must be terrible to live like this, even in the work houses they had more time off !

Take a bit of time off to live as you certainly can't take anything with you when you go

Re: Moving on 1st of May- all Customs closed?

Thank you again for your valuable advice! We were planning to use the border near Geneva as we will be driving from Spain. However now I am confused if we still need any stamp from EU border as well? It would mean that we cannot move on 1st of May as both - France and Germany have a holiday.

You need export stamps at least for the cars before you can declare them to the Swiss but many people don't declare upon first entry and do it at a later date. It means an additional trip back to the border but you can move that day. When I came over with my car full to the roof of stuff the Swiss were only interested in selling me a Vignette, which now I realise I didn't actually need at the time.

It's quite likely that most of the smaller border crossings offices will be shut on May 1st as it's a public holiday in many areas here (the crossings themselves will of course be open!). I see from a later post that you're planning to cross near Geneva, which for formal custom purposes would mean Bardonnex and yes, you will need to delare that you are 'exporting' household goods, cars, etc.from the EU as well then 'importing' same to Switzerland, the french office will almost certainly be shut as France is basically closed on May Day!

Here's a link for Swiss customs in english which should help, and for the exportation of your goods via France from Spain it's probably best you direct further questions to the french and spanish customs respectively directly!

Another consideration - were you planning on moving into an apartment? Depending on canton, you might not be able to get the keys to move in!

Thank you for being so thoughtful. We are staying in the hotel for a few nights (until our belongings arrive with the help of relocation company) and already scheduled the handover with the real estate agency for the next day.

I actually cannot wait to have this whole process done, it was quite "adventurous" finding the right apartment (it really pays off visiting in person and also walking around the area and doing some online research as we almost ended up renting a beautiful apartment but in the middle of a huge, noisy long-term construction site that is scheduled to start next month, which of course we had to find out ourselves) as well as doing all the paperwork (sometimes not making any sense like insisting on Swiss betriebungsregister while knowing we just came from abroad) .

Anyway, many thanks for all the advice! It's so great to have this forum, it has already helped me on many different occasions as most of the common problems are already covered.

Re: Moving on 1st of May- all Customs closed?

All the main border posts are open 24/7/365 so no worry there. Unless you're claiming back VAT you don't need to have export stamps and if personal effects (apart from ciggies and alcohol) you don't need to declare them either. If it's the car you wish to import then I'd suggest you do this later once you have your residence permit.

A few years ago I imported a car from the UK. We drove it for a month or so on UK export plates then had it tested and then went to pay the duty. It was all very quick and easy.

On a humorous note it was the first time they had tested this model, and it was great when they had to sheepishly ask me how to put the car in reverse!
