US travel visa interview, translator

My mother will be aplying for US visa in Bern but does not speak any local language or English. I will of course go with her, but was told in the embassy that they can't guarantee I will be allowed to come in with her for the interview, they decide on place if translator is needed and only then let me in.
Does anyone have such experience?
I'm thinking to apply for visa with her just to make sure I can be with her.
